Edison gets a bounce back win over Garaway
RICHMOND — The Edison softball team rebounded in a big way as the Wildcats capped the week with a big win.
Edison plated a pair of runs to rally from an early deficit and the Wildcats tacked on an insurance run in the sixth as Edison defeated Garaway, 4-2, on an overcast Saturday afternoon out at the Edison Unified Sports Complex.
“It was a big win,” Edison (7-8) head coach McKenzie Morrison said. “The girls played really hard. I am proud of them. Our strikeouts were down. Our errors were down. It was a team win. We needed that.”
The locals scored a run in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead, however, the Pirates plated a pair of runs in the third to take a 2-1 lead. Unfazed, the Wildcats countered with two of their own runs in the home half of the inning to regain the lead at 3-2. The home team’s run in the sixth capped the scoring in the game.
Edison entered the game coming off a 14-3 loss to Oak Glen in five innings Friday on the road. The loss was the team’s third straight this week, however, the Cats responded in a big way against the visitors from Tuscarawas County.
“We had a long talk today before we warmed up,” Morrison said asked what changed from Friday night to Saturday’s game. “We were able to bounce back with a win.
“Garaway is a good team. They have a good pitcher. Their coach is a seasoned veteran.”
Leighann Anderson picked up the win inside the circle for the Wildcats. Anderson struck out four and walked two.
Audrey Miller took the loss for the Pirates (6-2). Miller struck out four and walked one.
Edison delivered seven hits in the win – six of which were singles. Individually, Anderson helped her own cause with two singles, a double and an RBI, Ali Shrieve and Paige Somerville each singled twice and Sophia Henderson and Chloe Peckens each produced an RBI.
The Pirates tallied five hits in the game – four of which were singles. Individually, Krista Miller collected two singles, Zoe Jump produced a double and Audrey Miller and Kyleigh LaCroix each contributed a single. Also, Jaylene Jimenez ended up with an RBI.
Edison received a strong defensive performance from its outfield en route to the win.
“Our outfield was on point today,” Morrison said. “They made some great plays. Leighann pitched a great game.”
The Wildcats and Pirates have played a lot of games through the years.
“It’s always a good game whenever we play,” Morrison said. “It is always a close game. I am glad we showed up and played today.”
Edison is scheduled to play Wheeling Central at 5 p.m. today at home. The Maroon Knights defeated the Wildcats, 2-1, in 10 innings in the first meeting of the season between the two teams March 27 at home.
Garaway is slated to play Hiland at 5 p.m. today on the road.
