Edison gets offense going against Weir High

WEIRTON — The Edison baseball team had plenty of success offensively against Weir in adverse weather conditions Tuesday evening.

Edison scored in five of the six innings played, while holding Weir scoreless in four innings as the Wildcats toppled the Red Riders, 17-7, in six innings the Weir High Baseball Field.

“We took advantage of some of their mistakes,” Edison (8-2) head coach Mike Collopy said. “We put the ball in play for the most part. We saw some different arms. I am proud of the guys. I have to give them credit. It was less than ideal conditions, but they played with energy, and they played hard.”

Weir made too many mistakes in the game.

“There is not a lot to say,” Weir (5-9) head coach Dave Cowden said. “We did not play well in any aspect of the game. Early on, our pitchers could not throw strikes. We made too many errors. The scoreboard can’t be right. We couldn’t throw. We couldn’t catch. It was not good. We did not play well.

“I don’t want to take anything away from Edison. They are well coached. They hit the ball hard.”

The boys from Jefferson County built a 7-0 lead going into the bottom of the second before the hosts answered with six runs to make it a one-run ballgame. The visitors, however, regrouped and plated four more runs in the third and three more in the fourth to increase their advantage to 14-6.

The boys from Hancock County tallied a run in the home half of the inning to make the score, 14-7, however, the boys in black plated three more runs in the sixth to bring the mercy rule into play. The hosts were retired in order in the bottom of the inning to bring the game to an end.

“It’s all us,” Cowden said. “It’s all about us. We have to do better.”

Jackson McBane started and picked up the win for the Wildcats. McBane struck out one without walking a batter in his two innings of work on the mound. He was replaced by Kyle Long, who pitched the final four innings. Long, who started the game in left, struck out four and walked two during his time on the mound.

“This was Jackson’s third start in conditions like these,” Collopy said. “Kyle came in and did a good job. I am happy to get out of here with a win.”

The Red-and-Black used four pitchers in the loss. Evan Kaczmarek started and took the loss. Kaczmarek struck out two and walked one in his 1 2/3 innings of work on the mound. He was replaced with two outs in the second by Nick DeMatteis. DeMatteis

got the last out of the second and the first out of the third. He struck out one and walked five in his 2/3 of an inning of work. DiMatteis was replaced with one out in the third by Connor Lancaster. Lancaster did not record a strikeout while walking three in his 2/3 of an inning on the mound. Teddy Glyptis came on and pitched the final three innings. Glyptis struck out five and walked one.

Long had a good showing on the mound for the Silver-and-Black, and he also had a good day at the plate as he ended up with two singles, a triple and five RBI. Also for the victors, Cole Pittman collected two doubles and two RBI, Evan Kimmerle and JD Henderson each delivered a single and two RBI and Kayden Russell tallied a double and a triple. Finally, Cash Meadows singled, and Bryce Rogers recorded an RBI.

Lucas McAllister collected a home run and two RBI to lead the way offensively for the home team. Also, Cayden Braswell tallied a single and two RBI, Niko Glass and Liam Williamson each contributed two singles and an RBI and DeMatteis delivered a double and an RBI. Finally, Jonathan Horstman singled.

“We are getting better,” Collopy said. “Our last two games have not been clean. We played well in the previous six games. We want to keep getting better. The kids have bought in. They are taking the coaching. We just want to get better.”

Edison is scheduled to play Buckeye Local at noon Friday on the road. The Wildcats shut out the Panthers, 6-0, April 5 out at the Edison Unified Sports Complex.
