Madonna tops Cameron in battle of ranked Class A teams
WEIRTON -- In a battle of state-ranked teams, the Madonna baseball team emerged with a decisive victory over Cameron Wednesday at Bowman Field.
The Blue Dons, ranked No. 4 in West Virginia Class A by MetroNews, scored the first six runs of the game to pull away on the way to a 7-1 win over the ninth-ranked Dragons.
A four-run bottom of the fourth turned a 2-0 lead into a 6-0 advantage and put the now 7-2 Blue Dons in control.
The win is Madonna's fourth-straight.
""I thought the boys played very well defensively today," Madonna head coach TJ Miller said. "(Cameron coach Adam) Angel always does a great job with his squad, so I'm glad we executed well in the field. Our pitchers also worked hard and did well getting out of some jams. I thought our bats were a little cold tonight. We left 12 runners on base, so we have to do a better job at successfully hitting with RISP. We also need to limit our walks on the mound. If we can keep cleaning some stuff up and execute better with RISP, we are going to do great things this season."
Koleton Gtishkevich had a double and a single, Matt Geer doubled and had an RBI and Reno fuscardo doubled and drove in four runs on the day.
On the mound, David Connors went the first four innings, striking out six to earn the win while walking five. Jacob Lazear struck out two in one inning of relief work and Fuscardo fanned three in the final two innings.
Madonna is scheduled to host Wellsville today.
