Wildcats, Huskies split a twinbill
RICHMOND -- The Edison and Harrison Central softball teams split a doubleheader Tuesday evening at the Edison Unified Sports Complex, the Huskies winning the opener 12-9 and the Wildcats rebounded for a 7-6 win in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Huskies (9-5) scored the first five runs, fell behind 9-7 then scored the final five runs in the top of the seventh to take the win.
Bailey Smith had a double, single and four RBIs, Kelsey Powers had two hits and two RBIs and Kara Blackburn had two hits and two RBIs.
For Edison, which is now 9-9, in the opener, Alli Shrieve had two hits and three RBIs, Mady Cornell and Alivia Hanlin each drove in two runs.
In the second game, the Wildcats scored the first four runs, led 7-3 in the fifth and fended off another Huskies rally for the split.
Chloe Peckens had a triple, single and an RBI, Gracie Dray drove in three runs, Shrieve had a double and Cornell had two RBIs.
For Harrison Central, Kailey Banal had a pair of RBIs and Jaylin Ward had two hits.
The Huskies travel to East Liverpool today, while the Wildcats travel to Buckeye Local on Friday.
Big Red gets bats going at JM
GLEN DALE -- The Big Red softball team went to John Marshall on Tuesday evening and got the bats going, scoring 18 runs on 17 hits as every player in the lineup had a hit, RBI or run scored in a 18-9 run rule win.
Big Red, now 12-3, got monster days at the plate from its two DI recruits as Ohio University signee Sena Smith hit a homer, two doubles and a single for a four hit day with three RBIs and Akron commit Sadie Edwards homered, singled and drove in four runs.
Addison Meyer had a double, single and two RBIs, Sagan Smarrella had two hits and two RBIs, Riley Zorne had a double, two singles and two RBIs and Sophia Zorne also had two hits and an RBI.
Big Red hosts Indian Valley at noon on Friday.
Madonna makes it 13-straight
WEIRTON -- The Madonna softball team keep on winning.
The Blue Dons ran their win streak to 13 games on Tuesday with a 12-3 victory over visiting St. Clairsville on Tuesday evening, improving the Dons to 13-1 on the season.
Madonna got a triple, single and three RBIs from Madi Owens, while Gina Birkhimer had a double, two singles and two RBIs, Kendal Ryan had two hits and three RBIs and Ally Laughlin had two hits.
Ryan went the distance in the circle for the win, striking out two and walking one.
The Dons travel to Trinity Christian today.
Bears win two at the beach
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Oak Glen softball team's trip to the Ripkin Experience at Myrtle Beach started off with two big wins on Tuesday.
The Golden Beats, who are now 16-6, topped Lakewood (S.C) 6-2 in their opening game and defeated Marcellus (N.Y.) 11-3.
In the first game, Addie Smith belted a solo homer, while Riley Bruce had a double and a single, Mattie Carney had two hits and an RBI, Never Heath had two hits and Macie Hartung drove in a run.
Carney went all seven innings in the circle, striking out 12 and walking one.
In the second game, Carney blasted a homer and finished with three RBIs, Danica Holden had a double and an RBI, Smith drove in a run, and Maddie Murray had a double and a single and an RBI.
Holden went the first five innings, striking out eight, while Murray went the final two innings.
The Golden Bears play two games each today and Thursday before concluding their trip with one game Friday.
Central tops Jefferson Christian
STEUBENVILLE -- The Catholic Central softball team defeated visiting Jefferson County Christian 22-17 in a high-scoring contest on Tuesday for its second win of the season.
The now 2-7 Crusaders were led by a triple and an RBI from Maddie McEndree, a double and a single from Alexis Lathem, a double, two singles and five RBIs from Gianna Lemal, two hits and two RBIs from Madilyn Birkley, two hits and an RBI from Taylor Ensminger, two hits from Gracie Fink, two hits and an RBI from Genna Free and a hit and two RBIs from Mary Fink.
Lathem was the winning pitcher with 12 strikeouts and 17 walks in going all seven innings.
Central hosts Paden City on Monday.
BASEBALL
Madonna tops the Potters
WEIRTON -- The Madonna baseball team pulled away from visiting East Liverpool on Tuesday for a 13-1 victory at Bowman Field.
The Blue Dons, now 11-2 on the season and winners of eight-straight games, got a homer, two hits and an RBI from David Connors, a double and a single from Koleton Grishkevich, two hits and two RBIs from Matt Geer, a double and an RBI from Kaiden Wells and three RBIs from Sam Brooks.
Connors was the winning pitcher, striking out nine in four innings.
Madonna travels to Oak Glen today.
Central falls at Wellsville
WELLSVILLE -- The Catholic Central baseball team dropped a close 8-7 decision in extras on the road at Wellsville on Tuesday.
The Crusaders, now 2-4, scored the first three runs and led through five innings, but the Tigers rallied to tie it and won on a walk-off in the bottom of the eighth.
Mason Meeks had a double, single and two RBIs for Central, while Jospeh Vranish also drove in two runs.
Vranish struck out 10 batters and walked just one in tossing the first six innings.
Central hosts Bishop Rosecrans on Monday.
JCC tops Leetonia
MINGO JUNCTION -- The Jefferson County Christian baseball team pulled away from visiting Leetonia on Tuesday for a 10-2 win.
Carl Bonecutter went 4 for 4 at the plate with two triples, a homer and four RBIs, whole Aiden Howard, Lee Gump, Jack Anderson and EJ Keener each had two hits.
Keener was the winning pitcher for the now 9-4 Royals, striking out 11 batters.
MONDAY
Edison blanks Wheeling Central
RICHMOND -- The Edison softball team picked up a big, 10-0 run rule victory over West Virginia power Wheeling Central on Monday evening at home.
The Wildcats plated four in the third and added six in the fifth to end the game early.
Abby Boka had two doubles, a single and two RBIs, Alli Shrieve had a double, single and three RBIs, Leighanne Anderson had a double, single and two RBIs and Sophia Henderson doubled and plated a run.
Anderson tossed all five innings in the circle, striking out three and holding the Maroon Knights (12-3) to just one hit.
Red Riders fall to Morgantown
WEIRTON -- The Weir High softball team dropped a 4-1 decision at home to Morgantown on Monday evening.
For the Red Riders, Loganne Barton had two singles and an RBI.
Eliza Utt struck out four and walked one, hitting three, in a complete game in the circle.
