Bruins recover to win sectional opener in extra innings, 6-5
WEIRTON — Survive and advance is the goal in the postseason, and the Brooke softball team did just that against North Marion.
The Huskies scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to retake the lead, however, the Bruins battled back with a run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the score and send the game into extra innings.
After No.2 seed North Marion was held scoreless in its half of the eight, Maggie Diserio singled home Emma Michel with the winning run with one out to give third-seeded Brooke a 6-5 victory in the opening game of the West Virginia Class AA Region 1 Section 1 Tournament on a rainy Tuesday afternoon up at Weir’s Roberta “Birdie” DeFrancis Softball Field.
“It’s one pitch at a time, one hit at time and one play at a time,” Brooke (7-19) head coach Tom Diserio said. “We are not looking further than that.”
The Green-and-Gold led 4-1 going into the top of the seventh. The girls from Marion County were done by three runs and had a runner on first with one out in the inning, however, the Huskies refused to die as the plated four runs in the inning to take a 5-4 lead putting them three outs away from victory.
Unfortunately for the visitors on the scoreboard, it was not to be.
In the home half inning, Jazz Wood tripled to right, and she scored on a sacrifice fly by Maia Diserio to knot the score at 5-all.
After keeping the Huskies scoreless in the eighth, the Bruins came through in the clutch in their half of the inning to win the game.
“The girls are resilient,” Coach Diserio said. “They came into the dugout, and they knew what the objective was. They knew they had to hit the ball, get on base and score a run. That is what we have been doing all year.”
With the win, Brooke advances to play Weir in a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. today back at Weir. The Red Riders are the No. 1 seed in the tournament.
“It’s nice to get a break,” Coach Diserio said. “The team gets to live to play another day, and more importantly the seniors get to play another game.”
With the loss, North Marion had to play Weir in the second game of the doubleheader Tuesday night. The Red Riders defeated the Huskies, 7-0, to end North Marion’s season at 9-17.
Eden McKinney went the distance to pick up the win for Brooke. She struck out two and walked five.
Rayden Satterfield took the loss for North Marion. She struck out four and walked two in 7 1/3 innings of work.
The Huskies outhit the Bruins, 9-8, but Brooke got the biggest hit of the game.
Individually for the victors, Maggie Diserio delivered two singles and two RBI, Wood added a single, a triple and an RBI and Eden McKinney and Emilee McKinney each collected two base hits. Also, Maia Diserio produced two RBI and Emma Hayman ended up with a single.
Carleigh Tuttle tallied a single, a double and two RBI to lead the way offensively for the Huskies. Also, Brooke Toothman collected a single and an RBI, Satterfield finished the game with two RBI and Bella Talkington tripled. Finally, Katelynn Straight singled twice, and Reagan Ash, Maci Singleton and Blaike Hepner all singled.
North Marion scored a run in the second to take an early 1-0 lead. Brooke countered with two runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth to take a 4-1 lead.
Brooke won all three meetings with North Marion this season. The Bruins swept a doubleheader against the Huskies, 6-0 and 10-1, April 19 at home.
“We’re 3-0 against North Marion,” Coach Diserio said. “We played them in a doubleheader later in the season. The weather was comparable. It was raining and the grass was wet. When you play on turf, the ball does not get scuffed.”
Weir swept a doubleheader from Brooke, 9-0 and 8-3, April 15 at home.
“Now, we can take a breath,” Coach Diserio said. “We will see what happens in this game. We will see who our opponent is. We will be back at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow.”
