WINTERSVILLE — The Big Red volleyball team is in the win column.

Steubenville battled to victories in the first two sets on the road at Indian Creek on Tuesday night, then overcame the Redskins staying alive by winning the third set to finish things off with a strong fourth set, claiming the match 3-1.

“That something we always like to see is them respond after a set doesn’t go our way,” Big Red head coach Logan Colabella said. “That third set didn’t go our way, but they came right back even stronger in the fourth set and closed it out. We always expect it to be a battle when we play Indian Creek. They’re good team, well-coached and we know they’re going to go down swinging.

“It’s always good to get the first one, especially against a rival. Now we’re hoping we can build off it, flip the script from here and work our way up.”

After winning the opening set 25-21, Big Red had a big lead get away in the second set. However, the visitors fended off a pair of set points and rallied back for a 26-24 win, scoring the final four points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Creek again got down in the third set, but again had a rally — and this time completed it to stay alive with a 26-24 victory in a second-straight set that went extra distance.

In the fourth, however, there would be no rally as Big Red bounced right back and pulled away again, this time staying in front to close things out, 25-14.

“We’re just showing a lot of consistency right now,” Indian Creek head coach Crystal Hammack said. “We’ve got to eliminate some of the unforced errors and make plays with more consistency. Give Big Red credit, they have some good hitters and they passed the ball and put it away.

“It was good to see the fight in the third set, I had hoped we would have shown it a little bit sooner but it was good to see them respond in that moment and fight to stay in it.”

For Big Red (1-4), Emma Lyons had 10 kills, six digs and an ace, Addy Snyder tallied six kills and 17 assists, Aubrey Slussar recorded 19 assists, three aces and six digs, Giulina Cramer recorded 11 kills, five digs and six aces and A’rya Bigsby tallied six kills and four digs.
