HC falls to St. C in its first match

CADIZ — St. Clairsville kicked off its volleyball season in impressive fashion, sweeping homestanding Harrison Central 25-19, 25-10, and 25-13 on Friday in a mutual season opener.

St. C. received an all-around, solid performance, led by sophomore Corrin Pritts, who led all with 10 kills.

Pritts (5-4), smaller in stature than some of the other main Red Devils’ attackers, displayed her athleticism in rising above the net to hammer down some well placed and forceful shots.

Junior Madison Wehr and sophomore Vivian Harris backed Pritts’ output with seven kills apiece.

St. C.’s leading attacking trio benefited from a solid evening of setting from junior Ava Sounds, who finished with 20 assists while recording two kills.

Harrison Central (0-1) began its transition to life without a large season class from a season ago, including nearly all of their primary, experienced attackers.

The returning starters in the Huskies lineup needed time to adjust to their new, expanded rolls.

St. Clairsville jump out to a nine-point advantage during the first set before the Huskies started settling in.

Behind senior Hannah O’Grady, who finished with a team-highs in both kills (seven) and assists (seven), Harrison rallied briefly and cut the deficit to four at 19-23 before the visitors picked up the final two points for a 25-19 reading.

Set point came via an attack error by the Huskies. Errors were a minor theme throughout the contest, with Harrison surrendering 19 points during the final two sets — nine in the second and 10 in the third — because of errors.

The Huskies rejuvenated play carried into the second set, trailing only 8-10 before errors and some well-placed St. C. shots saw the Red Devils start to pull away.

By the time Mackenzie Jackson record an ace on set point to finish at 25-10, Harrison’s chances at making a full comeback started to dwindle.

Junior Leah Grady finished with four kills, three aces and three assists for Harrison, with freshman Ava Conley learning on the fly as a hitter, totaling five kills in her first high school performance.

The Grady sisters featuring in the kills leaders was unheard of a season ago, as the the were both ranked highly in assists per game a season ago.

That just further illustrates the transition the Huskies face during early season matches.

St. C. received some top-notch serving, with Abigail McCulley and Lola Schumacher recording four and three aces, respectively. The Devils committed only four service errors throughout the match.

The Red Devils hit the road again Tuesday, heading to Richmond to take on Edison. Harrison, meanwhile, faces rival Buckeye Local on Monday at Connorville before hosting Catholic Central on Tuesday.
