No prediction from Day on when he names a starting QB

COLUMBUS — Ryan Day said at a press conference on Monday that he couldn’t predict when he will make a decision on who will be Ohio State’s starting quarterback and that both Julian Sayin and Lincoln Kienholz had good and not so good moments in a scrimmage last Saturday.

“There were positives on both ends and negatives on both ends and I won’t predict when we will make the decision,” Day said. “We’re getting more and more information that we will need to make a decision. We will continue to let it play out.”

Day said this year’s quarterback competition reminds him somewhat of when Dwayne Haskins and Joe Burrow battled to see who would be OSU’s starting quarterback in 2018.

“Nothing is exactly the same but it’s similar in certain ways,” he said. “But ultimately it comes down to how they perform on the field.”

Asked how the team performed overall in last Saturday’s scrimmage, Day said, “I think we’re growing, I think that we still have work to do. There were things that I felt we definitely improved on last week. There are still things we’ve got to get fixed.

“Coming out of the weekend I felt like we were able to identify some guys to build some depth. This is a big week for us to take the next step. Each side of the ball has things they need to grow on and this is kind of the last week to do that.

“I guess the best way to put it is that in the first nine practices we got a lot done but we’ve still got a lot to do,” he said.

Another ongoing battle for playing time is at the interior defensive line positions. That competition has been affected by the knee injury suffered by Eddrick Houston on the first day of preseason practice.

With Houston not having a full preseason camp and the other interior defensive linemen having no starting experience, Day has some concerns.

“I’m seeing some other guys step up, which is great, but that battle is still going on. I think we’re finding some guys we can win with but the question is how many guys do we feel can take on the majority of the load and play at starter level and take on that type of a snap count,” he said. “We’ve seen guys flash, we need more consistency.”

Ohio State was ranked No. 3 in The Associated Press preseason college football poll behind Texas and Penn State. The poll was announced on Monday.
