Reese one of OSU’s defensive standouts in big win
COLUMBUS – Arvell Reese backed up the predictions of stardom for him with his performance in No. 3 Ohio State’s 14-7 win over No. 1 Texas in its season opener on Saturday.
The junior linebacker had a career-best 9 tackles, had the first full sack of his career and the first pass break-up of his career.
“Arvell has a lot of versatility. He has all the traits to be a dominant linebacker,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day said. “What I saw out there today was a guy running from sideline to sideline from the linebacker position. But at the end when Kenyatta Jackson went down he was playing up front and rushing the passer and putting pressure on the quarterback,
“This is probably the most he’s played in a big game like this. He will learn a lot from this.”
Jackson, a starting defensive end, was injured in the second half on Saturday. Day did not offer specifics on what type of injury it was but said he did not think it would be long term.
OFFENSIVE LINE VIEW: OSU left guard Luke Montgomery says Saturday’s 14-7 win over Texas reminded him of the Buckeyes’ 28-14 win over the Longhorns in a College Football Playoff semfinal in January.
“It was pretty similar. Similar score. We knew it was going to end up going into the fourth quarter,” he said. “There’s not many times you get to play the No.1 team at your house during week one. So it was pretty cool.”
Asked about the overall performance of the offensive line, he said, “They (Texas) have got some big boys up front. I think we did a great job on them. We could have done some things better but honestly the first game isn’t perfect. We have a lot to grow on and a lot of confidence now with that one.”
BIG CROWD: Saturday’s attendance figure of 107,524 was the twelfth largest crowd in Ohio Stadium history.
OPENING GAME STREAK: Ohio State has won 25 consecutive football openers.
NO. 2 FOR MATHEWS: Junior cornerback Jermaine Mathews’ interception against Texas was the second of his career.
