Big Red aims to keep it up

Steubenville seeks third-straight win in trip to Dover

DOVER — It certainly seems the Big Red football team has figured some things out.

After rallying to beat Cardinal Mooney the week before, Big Red’s offense broke out in a big way last week and Reno Saccoccia’s club rolled to a 55-7 victory over Linsly for back-to-back victories.

After scoring just seven points over its first two losses and enduring a stretch of eight scoreless quarters, Big Red has now scored 82 points in its last six quarters.

“We have the whole team involved now,” Saccoccia said. “It’s good to have everybody back. That’s one thing. And the second thing, we’ve been having a lot better practice as far as execution goes. Just getting some good guys on good guys and trying to get better like that.

“I just think that the first couple games, various things were involved in that. We played good teams to begin with, and we didn’t really have a set lineup. But as the season goes on, you get a set lineup. We’ve made a lot of moves on the offensive line. We’ve gotten some kids back, and it makes the game a lot easier when you’re healthy.”

This week, Big Red will look to build on that success as they travel for a second-straight week, this time going west to take on annual foe Dover.

While Big Red may be finding its groove now, the Crimson Tornadoes are coming in to the meeting struggling as they have dropped four-straight after an opening night victory.

Saccoccia, though, points out those results have not necessarily shown the full potential of this Dover team.

“They’ve been going through some injuries, and injuries at key positions,” Saccoccia said. “I don’t know if (those players) will play or not Friday, but the injuries are really at positions that hurt a team.”

While both teams might be having different seasons than past meetings, there is still a ton of familiarity between the sides. Friday’s match up will be the 31st time the programs have met, with Big Red holding a 23-6-1 edge in the all-time series.

Two of those meetings — one in the regular season and one in the playoffs — happened last season and both were decisive Big Red victories.

“We’ve been playing them so long, we know what they’re doing and they know what we’re doing,” Saccoccia said. “Whoever does what they do the best is going to have success. They very seldom run any trick plays, and we don’t run any trick plays. They’re a big screen team, and we’re a big play-action, run team and use the play-action pass. Whoever does their assignments better usually gets the better end of the game.”

Friday will also be the last time Big Red heads on the road this regular season, as after this week the final four games of the playoff push will be at Harding Stadium.

The trip to Dover, though, is first up and it’s one Big Red enjoys making.

“It’s a really nice stadium,” Saccoccia said. “They have support like nobody we’ve seen before. It’s just a great atmosphere that we get to play in, and our players enjoy going there to play.”

It’s a big game in the Region 11 standings as well. In the first official rankings, Big Red was No. 13 in the region and Dover was No. 20. The top 12 make the postseason this year.

The opening kick Friday night at Crater Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
