Bowers breaks school record in setback to Dover

STEUBENVILLE — Cole Bowers set a school record for goals, however, it was not a good day for the Big Red boys’ soccer team as a whole.

Big Red got off to a slow start against Dover, and the Tornadoes made the Red and Black pay as Dover delivered five goals in the second half to pull away for a 7-3 victory Saturday on Reno Saccoccia Field inside Harding Stadium.

Bowers scored his record-setting goal on an indirect kick inside the penalty box with 10:38 left to play in the match. The Army commit has now tallied 75 goals in his illustrious career. Bowers broke the record he shared with Matt Loot at 74 goals.

“Cole has worked hard,” Big Red (3-1-1) head coach Greg Bowers said. “He has had the benefit on playing on some good teams. He played with guys like Matt Loot and Anthony Venditti. It is a product of him playing on some good teams. It is a team effort. He has been a part of some good teams. He has become a great leader. I’m proud of him for setting the record. It is a big accomplishment.”

The visitors scored the first two goals of the match, and the boys in the white jerseys led 2-1 at halftime before erupting for five goals in the second half to pull away. The victors netted the first four goals of the half to build a 6-1 advantage.

Landon Bowers and Josiah Rea also scored goals for the boys from Jefferson County, while Chase Beall, Gabe Martin and Wells Gage all contributed an assist.

Big Red used two goalies in the match. JJ Lamantia started in goal, and the freshman made eight saves before being replaced by sophomore Luca Holt, who made one save.

Yassine Mohamed collected two goals to lead the way offensively for the boys from Tuscarawas County, while Dawson VanDonge, AB Gomez Sanchez, Gavin Burrier, Cayden Escusa and Zain Mohamed all tallied one goal.

Robert Wayland made one save in goal for the victors.

“They move the ball quickly,” Coach Bowers said. “They use short corners. We prepared for all of that, but we just didn’t execute. That’s one me. I did not have our guys prepared well enough.”

Dover (3-3) outshot Big Red, 19-7, and the Tornadoes took 16 shots on goal, while Big Red took four. Big Red took 17 goal kicks in the match, while the Tornadoes took 13. Dover ended the match with a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The visitors scored their opening goal with 37:25 left to play in the first half, and they added their second with 18:22 remaining in the half.

“No, not at all. It was not our day,” Coach Bowers said. “We came out flat from the start. We never got our footing. Give credit to Dover. This one is on me. I just did not have our kids ready to play.”

Landon Bowers put Big Red on the scoreboard with 5:45 remaining to be played before halftime.

The Tornadoes scored another early goal in the second half, and Dover was off and running.

Big Red is scheduled to play Oak Glen Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at home.

Dover is slated to play Wooster at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday at home.
