Brooke looks to bounce back to begin homestand

WELLSBURG — Brooke ran into a really big test last week at undefeated Indian Creek.

The Bruins hung with the Redskins early, but ultimately dropped a 41-14 decision on the road.

This week, the Bruins will look to bounce back in a return home to Paul “Bud” Billiard Field hosting Lincoln County on Friday night.

Brooke, now 1-3, begins a pivotal three game home stand against the Panthers, who are 0-3.

Lincoln County has suffered lopsided defeats to Winfield, Ripley and Herbert Hoover so far.

In those games, the Panthers have scored just eight points in each.

Brooke, meanwhile, has started to gets its offense going as the Bruins have put up a combined 38 points the past two weeks after being held off the scoreboard the first two weeks.

The second half of their win at Cambridge two weeks ago, in which they scored 24 points, was the start of the momentum.

The Bruins are averaging 9.5 points per game and nearly 230 yards of offense.

Both teams will look to improve on defense Friday night. Lincoln County is allowing an average of 55 points, while Brooke has yielded an average of 30.8.

For the Bruins, Ty Sperringer has thrown for 465 yards completing 45 percent of his passes with three touchdowns and six interceptions, while adding another 132 yard rushing.

Michael Gibson is the Bruins leading rusher with 156 yards and a yards-per-carry average of nearly 4.5.

Grant Yost has 12 catches for 228 yards and a score to lead the way receiving.

After this week, the Bruins will host East Liverpool and Frankfort before three road games to end the regular season.
