Edison looks to avoid a let down after big victory

CALDWELL — Beware of the letdown.

Sometimes, after a big win, a team can suffer a letdown in its next outing. Coming off a big win last week, the Edison football team is looking to avoid a letdown as it seeks its third straight victory.

Last week, Edison led Martins Ferry, 21-20, in the second quarter before the Wildcats scored 27 unanswered points to defeat the Purple Riders, 48-20, down at the Dave Bruney Football Complex.

“Overall, it was a great team performance from the offense, defense, special teams, skill guys to the linemen, everyone stepped up,” first-year Edison (3-1) head coach Anthony Pierro said. “We took an early lead, and we had to weather a storm. We had a great opening drive.

“Defensively, we played lights out. We forced six turnovers. We gave up no points in the second half. We stayed together. It was big for our momentum. They gave a great effort. It was a big win against a local team. We came together. I am proud of the guys. Now, it is on to next week. I told the guys we are going to enjoy this one and then move on to Caldwell. I am proud of how we have gotten better.”

This week, the Wildcats hit the road for the third straight week as Edison is set to take on Caldwell at 7 p.m. on the Redskins’ new turf field.

“Caldwell wants to spread you out,” Pierro said. “They want to run their quarterback. They have a couple of nice running backs. They are 2-2, but in the two games they have lost, they were in those games until the end of the game or the third quarter. They are a hard-nosed team.

“When you have to drive two hours, you never know what can happen. We play Toronto next week. You don’t want to take anyone easy. You don’t want to have a let down. If you do, you are going to have a hard time. If you don’t bring your ‘A’ game, you are going to lose.

“We want to get better every day at practice. We had a good practice today, and we want to stay locked in. We want to have good practices the rest of the week.”

Caldwell enters this week’s game coming off a 41-0 victory against Monroe Central at home.

“They run a 4-4 with a cover 3,” Pierro said. “Their linebackers get downhill. They mix up their coverages. They are going to be a challenge for us. We think we have put in a good gameplan to take advantage of some things. We have to go out and execute.”

Caldwell defeated Buckeye Trail, 38-0, in the season opener at home before falling to Waterford, 21-6, on the road and Tuslaw, 43-20, in another road game.

After going on the road for three straight games, Edison is scheduled to return to home next Thursday against rival Toronto.

“This game is definitely a trap game,” Pierro said about the Caldwell game. “It is my job as the head coach to make sure we stay focused on this week. We have a big game upcoming, but this week is going to be a battle. If you look ahead, you are going to take the loss.”

The Wildcats defeated the Redskins, 34-15, last year at home.
