Red Riders edge past Brooke 1-0
WELLSBURG — Brynn Artman made her shot count.
Artman, a senior midfielder, gained control of a loose ball and fired a shot from long range into the back of the net giving the Weir girls’ soccer a team 1-0 lead in the first half against rival Brooke.
The Bruins attempted to net the equalizer, however, Red Rider goalie Bella Weber and the team’s defense rose to the occasion and kept Brooke off the scoreboard as Weir came away with a 1-0 victory Tuesday night on Paul “Bud” Billiard Field inside Brooke Memorial Stadium.
“That’s all we needed,” Weir (2-3) head coach Jeremy Angelo said. “We got one, and we did not give up a bad one, two or three. They had a couple of shots, but they weren’t too scary. It was a physical war out there. We got one. We came out and played. We played hard.
“We controlled the game for the most part. Brooke had a couple minutes there when they were down on our end of the field, but we were frustrated them for a while, and we were able to get the ball back on their end.
“All you need is one. We got one, and that was all we needed.”
Ivy Myers did her part to keep the Green and Gold in the match as the junior goalkeeper made nine saves.
“We played, and we got beat,” Brooke (1-4) head coach Jack Minger said. “That’s all there is too it. Weir was aggressive the whole game.”
Weber also played a strong game in net as the junior also made nine saves en route to helping her team secure a big victory.
“That is the way it is going to be for us,” Angelo said about close matches for his team. “It is going to be one half, or 20 minutes or three, four or five minutes. It just depends on what is going on and what we are doing.
“Our games are not for the faint of heart. It is not going to be easy. It’s not just going to be boom, boom, boom. It’s going to be a battle. Defensively, we gave up shots, but it was nothing where it was oh my God.
Artman’s goal came with 5:33 left to play in the first half.
“It is the small things we have to fix,” Minger said.
Weber made some key saves the rest of the way to preserve the shutout.
“It’s like an unofficial city championship,” Angelo said. “It is the same when we play Oak Glen. It’s going to be a battle. The girls are know each other. They don’t want to lose. They like each other, they’re giving each other hugs and they’re talking. It’s good competition. We knew they were a good team.”
Weir is scheduled to play Hancock County rival Oak Glen at 6:30 p.m. Thursday on the road.
Brooke is slated to play Beaver Local at 7 p.m. Thursday on the road.
