Toronto volleyball strong in sweep of Wellsville
TORONTO — The Toronto volleyball team delivered a strong performance against rival Wellsville.
Coming off a loss Monday, the Red Knights rebounded in a big way against the Tigers as Toronto swept Wellsville, 25-16, 25-9, 25-20, in a varsity only match Wednesday evening inside the George J. Kunzler Memorial Gymnasium.
“It was definitely a better performance,” first-year Toronto (5-4) head coach Shannon Bahen said. “We mixed the ball around. We tried to keep the ball on our side. We didn’t want to give the ball to them. We were aggressive. We played defense. That is the way we want to play.”
The sweep was Toronto’s second against Wellsville this season.
“They played good,” Wellsville (2-6) head coach Sherry Allen said. “We have a young team this season. They are getting a little better every game.”
Individually for Toronto, Jayna Reeves recorded 14 kills, eight points and one ace, Gracee Rex collected 20 digs and 19 points and JJ Rebich contributed 21 assists and four points. Also, Kylie Mitchell tallied six kills and one block, Chloe Fisher delivered one kill and four blocks and Danielle Sutherin added eight assists. Finally, Sydney Fisher finished with five kills, and Emma Parello produced four kills.
“It was a similar game to the one up at our place,” Allen said.
For Wellsville, Madie Drysdale delivered three blocks and three kills, Aleena Owens tallied five kills and Kenzie Bosco collected four kills. Also, Jonnah Sears contributed 10 assists.
“Wellsville has improved a lot since we played them last week,” Bahen said. “Their net play was great. Their defense was great. We did not get any easy points. They fought. They battled. It was a good game.”
Game 1 was close early on as the two teams traded points. The girls from Jefferson County went on a little run and took a 10-6 lead, and the Red and White extended their advantage to 14-9 causing Allen to call a timeout. The hosts were able to keep the momentum on their side as they went to win the game by nine points to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
“Wellsville was a lot more aggressive this time,” Bahen said. “They did a good job in the middle. The hit the ball down the line. They kept us on our toes. They did a good job. It was a good game tonight.”
The victors were in control of Game 2 for most of it. The girls in white built a 13-7 advantage resulting in Allen calling a timeout, however, the girls from Columbiana County were unable to turn the tide as Toronto outscored Wellsville, 12-2 following the timeout to win the game by 16 points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
“The young girls are doing good,” Allen said. “We are mostly freshmen and sophomores. Seven of the 10 are underclassmen. We are going a little better each game. I cannot complain. The girls are working hard in the gym.”
The girls from the Gem City jumped out to an 11-7 advantage in game 3, however, the Orange and Black rallied and tied the score at 17. Toronto, however, responded and scored the next four points to take a 21-17 lead causing Allen to call a timeout. The Red Knights did not give up control following the timeout as Toronto went on to win the game by five to win the match, 3-0.
“It is nice to beat a rival,” Bahen said. “We are going to enjoy this win tonight and get ready to play Big Red tomorrow.”
Wellsville is scheduled to play Southern Local at 6 p.m. today on the road in a varsity only match.
“It’s another rival,” Allen said. “The girls are pumped about tomorrow.”
Toronto is slated to play Jefferson County rival Big Red tonight inside the Crimson Center. The varsity match is scheduled to start at 6:45 p.m.
“Big Red has a good program,” Bahen said. “I have known Logan (Colabella) for a long time. She does a great job. They are having a good season. We are looking forward to playing them. We are going to have to be ready.”
