Weir High boys soccer pulls away from Brooke
WEIRTON – Seven is the lucky number, and it proved to be a good number for the Weir boys’ soccer team.
Weir recorded its first goal less than four minutes into its match against rival Brooke, and the Red Riders pulled away for a 7-0 victory Thursday night up at Jimmy Carey Stadium.
“We played well,” Weir (4-5) head coach Adam Welsh said. “We lost our way the last couple of games. We did not possess the ball the way we like to and the way we know how to do. We got back to that today. I am proud of the effort tonight.”
The Red and Black collected four goals in the first half before scoring three more in the second. Weir’s second goal of the second half brought the running clock into play.
“We fell behind early, and we could not catch up,” Brooke (0-9) head coach Joe Pepe said. “We played better in the second half. We will get there. We have a young team. We’ll get there. It just takes time. It takes time. We are trying to find the right key. we’re trying to find the right combination. We’ll get there.”
For Weir, Caiden Lamp and Kalen Kuhns each tallied two goals, while Micah Hvizdack, Jarod Bishof and Aiden Mills all tallied a goal. Also, Hvizdack collected a pair of assists, while Lorenzo Liberto delivered one.
Caden Runkel recorded seven saves in goal for the hosts.
Bronson Pack made eight saves in goal for the visitors.
“They are a young team,” Welsh said about the Bruins. “You have to build back up. Mr. Pepe will definitely build them back up.”
Lamp opened the scoring off an assist by Hvizdack to give the Red and Black an early 1-0 lead with 36:16 left to play in the first half. Hvizdack was credited with Weir’s second goal less than four minutes later to give the boys from Hancock County a 2-0 advantage. Bishof scored off an assist by Hvizdack to increase the Red Riders’ advantage to 3-0 before Kuhns capped the scoring in the first half to make the score, 4-0.
“We have progressed nicely except for the last two games,” Welsh said. “We went 1-1 in those games, but we were not playing our style of soccer. We had to build that again. We had to reset and refocus. We had to get back to playing how we play. I am proud of our effort all around.”
Lamp opened the scoring in the second half less than 11 minutes into the half to extend Weir’s advantage to 5-0. Then, Kuhns scored off an assist by Liberto to make it, 6-0, before Mills capped the scoring with 1:04 still showing on the scoreboard clock.
“My team left it all on the field,” Pepe said. “We fell behind, and we could not catch up. We played a lot better in the second half.”
Both teams took seven goal kicks in the match, while the boys in black held the advantage in corner kicks.
“I have a lot respect for Mr. Pepe,” Welsh said. “He coached me when I was 5. He has done so much in the Ohio Valley relating to soccer.”
Weir is scheduled to play Beaver Local at noon Saturday at home.
“Beaver Local is a solid team,” Welsh said. “We look forward to the challenge. They are definitely a solid team. We look forward to the challenge.”
Brooke is slated to play Edison at 2 p.m. Saturday out at the Edison Unified Sports Complex.
