WEIRTON — The Weir High girls soccer team is getting chances. They just are not finding a way to convert them through their first nine games.
The Red Riders had several chances Tuesday evening in a home match against visiting Fairmont Senior, but it was the Polar Bears who left Jimmy Carey Stadium with a 2-0 victory.
“We’re struggling to finish,” Weir head coach Jeremy Angelo said. “We’re getting opportunities, but we’re either shooting them over the goal, off wide or rolling them into to the keeper.
“They capitalized on their couple of opportunities and we didn’t capitalize on ours.”
The Red Riders, now 3-4-2, were held off the scoreboard for a second time this season. They’re averaging two goals per game. They had a 10-0 win over John Marshall back in the second game of the season, they’ve scored two or less in every other game, however.
“Our top scorer from last year went down so we knew we were going to have some struggles scoring, but the struggle has continued,” Angelo said. “We just have to keep working. We’re creating, we’re setting, we’re building, we’re in the game, now we’ve got to finish those shots off.”
In Tuesday’s match, the chances were there. The Red Riders had several in the late going, but either missed the net or did not get a good shot off, something Angelo said the team has been working on quite a bit in practice.
“We had three or four good chances in the last 15 minutes, we could have won the game if we finish those,” Angelo said. “Out last few shots were not where someone was pushing of kicking, they were wide open and the kind of looks we look for, and we didn’t put them away.
“You at least have to put it on goal, when you fo all that work to create a chance and don’t, it takes a lot of energy.
“You would be surprised how much work we do on offense in practice, it’s most of what we work on. We’re creating chances, we’re just not taking advantage. They’re high school kids, they’ll keep working and get better.”
The Red Riders will look to find their scoring touch on a quick turnaround as they travel to OVAC Class 4A leading Beaver Local on Thursday.
The Red Riders sat third in the standings Tuesday night. The cutoff for the conference tournament is Thursday.
