Brooke needs to bounce back on long trip to Elkins

ELKINS — It’s been a tough couple of weeks for the Brooke football team.

After winning three of four to put themselves back in the playoff race in Class AAA, the Bruins have dropped back-to-back games to playoff teams in undefeated Frankfort (No. 2 in Class AA) and on the road at John Marshall (5-2, 16th in Class AAA) last week.

Now at 3-5, the Bruins have two games left, looking to win them both to finish at the .500 mark in the first year under head coach Frank Sisinni.

That quest starts with a long trip Friday night as the Bruins travel three hours south to battle another solid team in 5-3 Elkins.

The Tigers are another team in playoff position, sitting No. 13 in the Class AAA standings.

To slow them down, the Bruins will have to stop the run. The Tigers, though their first six games, had only thrown the ball 10 times while running it on 279 snaps, or nearly 97 percent of the time.

They have three main ball carriers. Senior Logan Beam had 752 yards and 16 TDs, both team highs, through six games, while Jaden Hatfield had 730 yards and 10 scores and Seth Robinson was averaging more than 10 yards per carry with 656 yards and six scores.

The Tigers average 35.3 points per game and allow an average of 23.1.

Brooke, meanwhile, is scoring an average of 15.1 points and allowing an average of 30.5.

Ty Sperringer is nearing 1,000 yards passing with 948, seven TDs and 12 INTs, while adding another 253 yards and two scores with his feet.

His top target is Grant Yost, who has 28 grabs for 442 yards and three scores.

Brooke’s ground game is led by Michael Gibson with 293 yards. He averges nearly five yards per carry.
