Brooke riding momentum ahead of meeting with Potters

WELLSBURG — The Brooke Bruins are coming off of their best performance yet, a 35-0 triumph at home over visiting Lincoln County.

The victory is Brooke’s second in three weeks after an 0-2 start, and the 35 points were a season high for the Bruins.

This week, the Bruins are back at home at Brooke Memorial Stadium to host East Liverpool looking to build off that momentum.

The Potters come to Brooke County with a mark of 2-4.

The teams have three common opponents as each have lost to unbeaten Indian Creek and Beaver Local and both own a victory over Cambridge.

The Potters win over the Bobcats last week snapped a four-game skid.

Brooke, after being held off the board in its first two games, have got its offense going, scoring an average of 24.3 points in the last three weeks.

Last week, Ty Sperringer threw for 124 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for an additional score.

He fired touchdown passes to Marcus Reed, Grant Yost and Ethan Fisher.

Michael Gibson ran for 96 yards and a score in the win as well.

On the season, Sperringer has 589 pass yards with six TDs and six picks, while rushing for 160 and another score.

Gibson leads the ground game with 252 yards, averaging nearly 5.9 yards per carry.

Yost leads the team with 281 receiving yards and a pair of scores on 15 catches.

The defense is coming around, too, the shutout last week being by far its best performance. The Bruins have yeilded just a total of 14 points in the two victories, while allowing 36.3 in the losses.

For the Potters, QB Ben Myers leads the way with 507 pass yards with six TDs and six interceptions on the season, while rushing for 132 yards and three more scores.

Tamar Tisdale is the team’s leading rusher with 212 yards and a score, averaging better than five yards per carry.

Dre’Keim Abercrombie has a team-high 18 catches for 287 yards and five touchdowns.

This week is the middle game of a three-game home stand for Brooke, who hosts Frankfort next week before closing the regular season with three-straight on the road.

The Bruins have some work to do to extend their season past that, as they sit 21st in Class AAA with the top 16 making the playoffs.

The opening kick on Friday night is set for 7 p.m.
