Dons top Weir in four sets to win city championship

WEIRTON — The strong season for the Madonna volleyball team continues.

The Blue Dons, fresh off their runner-up finish in last week’s OVAC tournament, topped rival Weir High on the road on Monday evening to claim the city championship trophy.

Madonna won the match by scores of 25-11, 25-18, 17-25, 25-16.

The Dons also earned their 20th victory of the season with the win, improving to 20-9-1.

Leading the way for Madonna was Sophie Brady who had 30 assists, 13 digs and two kills, Madison Owens with 15 kills, 24 digs and two aces, Geena Birkhimer with seven kills, four aces and three digs and Rylee Birkhimer with seven kills, 10 digs and an ace.

For the Red Riders, Amalia Kirlangitis tallied 23 assists and 14 digs, Ella Kaufman had 19 digs, eight kills and two aces, Illionna Kirlangitis recorded 12 digs, six kills and two aces and Kaylee Webster had 15 digs.

Weir drops to 6-16-1 on the season.

The Blue Dons travel to Clay-Battelle on Wednesday, while the Red Riders travel to Wheeling Park today.
