RICHMOND — The Edison girls’ basketball team stayed undefeated while also celebrating an historic achievement of one of its own.
Edison senior standout Sophia Henderson sank a 3-pointer from the wing with 1:21 left in the second quarter enabling the Muskingum commit to reach the 1,000 point plateau in her illustrious career, and her team went on to defeat Heartland Christian, 66-28, Thursday night in a game played in the gym inside Edison High School.
“It was a very good night,” Edison (12-0) head coach Mark Smyth said. “Our No. 1 goal was to get a win against Heartland Christian team. They are well coached. They are a good team. They are going to do well down in Single-A in the OVAC.
“Our No. 2 goal was to have Sophia get her 1,00th point. The other four girls out on the court with her made sure that happened.”
Henderson’s third 3-pointer of the game gave her 19 points on the night. Following the 3-pointer, Smyth called a timeout, and subbed his starters out of the game with 1:19 left to play before halftime with the Wildcats out in front, 40-12.
Henderson was recognized for her achievement, and the game continued after a short celebration. Henderson only played a few minutes in the second half before departing the game for good. Her 19 points was the game-high.
The girls from Jefferson County took a 42-14 lead into the locker room at halftime, and the victors extended their advantage out to 57-15 after three quarter of play.
The running clock came into play after Edison scored the first seven points of the third.
The Lions outscored the hosts, 13-9, in the fourth to complete the scoring.
Abby Carpenter recorded 17 points to help lead the way for the Wildcats.
Kalleigh Shodd collected a team-high 12 points for the girls from Columbiana County, while Kaylin Norbo tallied 11 points – all of which came in the fourth.
Heartland Christian’s Sarah Reynolds was injured with seven seconds left in the first her team trailing just 16-10. Reynolds stayed down the court for a couple of minutes before being carried off the court. She remained by the bench for a few minutes before being carried out of the gym. She did not return to the game.
Carpenter netted a bucket in the waning seconds of the quarter enabling Edison to increase its advantage to 18-10 at the end of the quarter.
Henderson became the third Edison player since the consolidation of the schools to reach 1,000 points as she joined the ranks of Kayla Prokopakis and Kayla Huff.
“It is really exciting for us,” Smyth said. “We’re all happy that it happened.”
Overall, Henderson is the fourth Edison player to ever reach the mark. Kim Paciorek, a 1993 graduate of Edison South, reached the mark prior to the consolidation of the schools.
Edison is scheduled to play Sandy Valley Monday on the road.
“It’s a big game,” Smyth said. “Sandy Valley is 10-3.”
Heartland Christian is slated to play Aquinas Thursday at home.
