WVU pass rusher/running back Curtis Jones Jr. enters portal

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia lost another well-known name from 2025 to the transfer portal.

Pass rusher/running back Curtis Jones Jr. announced he’s entering the transfer portal on social media. Jones has entered the portal with two years of eligibility.

Jones had an interesting time in Morgantown. Jones played 11 games his true freshman year and was a depth piece at linebacker, primarily playing special teams. Jones was used in a different way in 2025. The Mountaineers had a lot of running back injuries, and their bigger back, Tye Edwards, was out. So, Rodriguez subbed Jones in on short-yardage plays at running back. Jones was a decorated running back in high school.

“All our running backs are getting hurt,” Rodriguez said on making Jones an RB. “It’s like our quarterbacks are getting hurt. What are we going to do? Who’s played running back before? There wasn’t a whole lot of thought into that.”

Jones had some success at running back. He made his debut against Colorado, where he had three rushes and two touchdowns. He finished the last two games and racked up 11 carries for 24 yards and three touchdowns.

Jones also had 22 tackles for three tackles for loss, too. But once he started playing running back, Jones didn’t play defense as much.

With Jones’ departure and the rest of the transfers, WVU’s only running back coming back from 2025 to 2026 was Andre Devine, whose father, Noel Devine, is on staff. Devine didn’t play, so there’s no running back production coming back.

The Mountaineers already have reinforcements on the way. WVU added Jacksonville State and the nation’s leading rusher Cam Cook on Tuesday. The Mountaineers have multiple running backs coming in through the high school recruiting class. WVU has 4-star Amari Latimer and 3-star SirPaul Cheeks. There are more, too, that’ll make up the 2026 running back room.
