12 locals advances to state tourney from Div. 2 regional

WEIRTON -- A dozen local wrestlers are headed to the state tournament in WVSSAC Division II after regional action in Weirton on Saturday.

The Division II, Region 1 tournament took place inside Weir High on Saturday and the top four placers in each weight class earned a spot in the state tournament March 5-7 at The Marshall Health Network Arena in Huntington.

Six wrestlers from the host Red Riders and six from Oak Glen earned their trips to Charleston.

Oak Glen, which placed second as a team, had an individual champion in Noah Schmidt, who was the winner in the 215-pound division with a 1:53 pin over Wheeling Central's Dustin Sanner.

Also earning a trip to the state tournament were Jordan Thomas (runner up at 106 pounds), Kaleb Eckleberry (runner up at 126 pounds), Kayden Spencer (runner up at 132 pounds), Wyatt Wolanski (third place at 144 pounds) and Parker Boyce (fourth place at 157 pounds).

The Red Riders were fifth overall in team scores and also had an individual champ as 126-pounder Chad Artman pinned Eckleberry to capture the weight class crown.

Also earning a trip to Huntington from the Red Riders were Jonathan Rhodes (fourth at 150 pounds), Joshua DeFelice (runner up at 165 pounds), Hunter Streng (fourth at 175 pounds), Brendan Bryan (third at 190 pounds) and Brock Hebb (fourth at 285 pounds).
