Crusaders fall to top-seed Strasburg in district semis
UHRICHSVILLE — The Catholic Central girls basketball team’s run came to an end on Wednesday evening.
The Cruaders dropped a 58-21 decision to top-seeded Strasburg in the Division VII East District semfinals inside Claymont High School.
The Tigers (20-5) opened a 25-7 lead after one quarter and led 54-13 at halftime.
“Strasburg came out with a smothering press throughout the first half rotating between a diamond and one and full court man to man. In the second half they went to their bench and took off the pressure,” Central coach Rocky Bragg said. “The girls got flustered with the pressure they were facing in the first half that led to turnovers.”
Central, the No. 5 seed, drops the curtain on its season at an even 12-12.
The Crusaders’ efforts were led by 12 points from Mary Rohde and five from Mara Delaney.
Rohde was one of four Central seniors who saw their time in blue and gold come to a close.
“Mary Rohde, Gemma Rigaud, Kenadie Balabin, and Mary Fink led by example and were very respectful and courteous to their teammates,” Bragg said. “They were everything that you would hope for showing senior leadership.”
Strasburg will play No. 2 seed Caldwell on Saturday in New Philadelphia.
