Locals advance from sectional swim meet
STEUBENVILLE — Indian Creek senior Hunter Rusnak certainly had a day to remember as he brought home the gold in a pair of individual events, while also being a key member of two placing relay teams at the Ohio Division II Eastern District Sectional Swim Meet held Saturday inside the Steubenville High School Natatorium.
Individually, Rusnak finished first in the 50 freestyle (23.75) and the 100 freestyle (52.30) as well as being a member of Indian Creek’s fourth-place finishing 400 freestyle relay team (3:51.33) and the fifth-place finishing 200 freestyle relay team (1:41.07)
Rusnak was joined on the 400 free team by Paul Oberrauch, Brody Kurner and Elijah Bright. Rusnak was joined by Sam Doerr, Max Bolton and Oberrauch on the Redskins’ 200 free relay team.
Rusnak will be competing in all four events at the upcoming district meet. By finishing first, he automatically qualified for the district meet in the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle. His 50 free time was the 12th fastest of all of the Division II sectional meets, while his 100 free time was the 10th fastest.
On the relay side, Indian Creek’s 400 free relay team qualified for the district meet with the 10th fastest time, while the 200 free relay team qualified with the 15th fastest time.
Also for the Red-and-Gold, Oberrauch placed second behind Rusnak in the 50 free (23.76). Oberrauch also qualified for the district meet as his time was the 13th fastest. The senior also placed third in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.96). The time was good enough to advance him to the district meet. His time was the 12th fastest of all the sectional meets.
Rusnak was not the only boy to bring the home gold as Big Red freshman Max Henderson finished first in the 500 freestyle (5:17.45). Henderson’s time was a personal best. As a result of finishing first, Henderson automatically qualified for the district meet. Henderson had the eighth fastest time at all the sectional meets.
Also, Cooper Kirkpatrick finished sixth in the 100 butterfly (1:07.22), and he will be an alternate at the district meet. Finally, Kabron Harris placed eight in the 100 backstroke (1:08.96) at the sectional meet, and he will be an alternate at the district meet.
On the relay side, Big Red placed third in the 400 freestyle relay (3:46.69). The time was good enough for Big Red’s team of Eli Jankowski, Kyler Snyder, Henderson and Kirkpatrick to qualify for the district meet. The foursome finished with the 10th fastest time.
Also, Big Red finished sixth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:41.53). The team of Kirkpatrick, Jankowski, Snyder, and Henderson qualified for the district meet in the event. The foursome had the 16th fastest time of all the sectional meets. The Red-and-Black also finished sixth in the 200 medley relay (1:58.04). The team of Harris, Henderson, Kirkpatrick and Snyder qualified for the district meet with the 19th fastest time.
Individually for Catholic Central, Javier Descalzo completed the all-Jefferson County podium in the 50 freestyle (23.79) with a third-place finish. Descalzo’s time was good enough to advance to the district meet as it was the 14th fastest time at all of the sectional meets. The sophomore also finished sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.59). The time was good enough to qualify for the district meet, and he will be entering the meet with the 23rd fastest time.
Descalzo will also be competing on the relay side of things at the district meet for the Crusaders. Catholic Central finished seventh in the 200 medley relay (2:01.10). Descalzo was joined on the team by Colton Dobson, Marcus Poulin and Cash Dobson. The foursome has the 22nd fastest team going into the district meet. The Blue-and-Gold also qualified for the district meet in the 400 freestyle relay (3:57.13). The time resulted in the same foursome placing eighth at the sectional meet, and they will enter the district meet with the 18th fastest time.
Also, Marcus Poulin finished seventh in the 100 backstroke (1:07.64) enabling him to qualify for the district meet. Poulin has the 29th fastest time.
Edison did not have swimmers qualify for the district meet in an individual event, however, the Wildcats will be competing on the relay side of things.
Edison finished fourth at the sectional meet in the 200 medley relay (1:54.85). The team of Wyatt Bernhart, Micah Larkins, Isaac Pudder and Kolton Decker head into the district meet with the 14th fastest time. The same foursome finished fourth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:40.75). The time was the 13th fastest at all the sectional meets. Finally, the Silver-and-Black finished fifth in the 400 freestyle relay (3:52.99). The team of Ethan Warren, Pudder, Bernhart and Decker enter the district meet with the 16th fastest time.
Tri-Valley finished first in the meet overall with 403 points, Beaver Local placed second with 308.5 and Barnesville was third with 189.
Indian Creek was the top local finisher as the Redskins finished in fifth place with 157. Also, Big Red finished sixth with 138.5, Catholic Central finished seventh with 118 points and Edison ended up ninth with 97.
On the girls’ side, Beaver Local brought home the gold to Columbiana County as the Beavers finished first with 253 points, St. Clairsville placed second with 250.5 and Big Red ended up third with 195.
Locally, Indian Creek finished with 178, Edison ended up 10th with 102 and Catholic Central finished in 14th place with 41.
No local individual or relay team finished first in an event.
For Big Red, Gabriella Rea qualified for the district meet in four events having qualified in two individual events as well as two relay races.
Individually, Rea recorded a fourth-place finish in the 50 freestyle (29.03) giving Rea the 25th fastest time entering the district meet. The sophomore also qualified in the 100 freestyle (1:06.30). Rea finished in seventh place in that event giving her the 26th fastest time heading into the district meet.
On the relay side, Big Red placed second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:53.68). The foursome of Maddy Shreves, Lilly Jefferies, Magdalene McKenna and Rea enter the district meet with the eighth fastest time. Also, Big Red ended up third in the 400 freestyle relay (4:18.44). The team of Shreves, Rea, Jeffries and McKenna enter the district meet with the sixth best time.
Also on the individual side, McKenna qualified for the district meet in the 200 freestyle (2:16.97) by virtue of her fourth-place finish. McKenna had the 18th fastest time among all the sectional meets. Next, Jeffries finished fifth in the 500 freestyle (6:08.45). Jeffries enters the district meet with the 16th fastest time. Finally, Shreves finished seventh in the 100 breaststroke (1:24.77) giving her the 27th fastest time entering the district meet.
Finally, the Red-and-Black also finished third in the 200 medley relay (2:08.84). The team of Bella Prolago, Shreves, Jefferies and McKenna enter the district meet with the ninth fastest time.
For Indian Creek, the trio of Hailee Hixenbaugh, Sophie Doerr and Ruby Howell have all advanced to the district meet in four events with each girl qualifying in one individual event while also qualifying in all three relay races.
Individually, Hixenbaugh placed third in the 50 freestyle (28.02). She enters the district meet with the 20th fastest time. Howell finished sixth in the 200 individual medley (2:17.27) giving her the 25th fastest time at all of the sectional meets. Finally, Doerr delivered a seventh-place finish in the 100 butterfly (1:21.45). She has the 28th fastest time.
On the relay side, the team of Howell, Doerr, Hixenbaugh and Gabby Boyuk placed third in the 200 freestyle relay (1:55.57). They have the 10th fastest time going into the district meet. The same foursome finished fifth in the 400 freestyle relay (4:22.49) to give them the ninth fastest time entering the district meet. Finally, Kendall Canestraro joined Howell, Doerr and Hixenbaugh on the Red-and-Gold’s district qualifying 200 medley relay team (2:17.27). The team finished sixth at the sectional meet and has the 17th fastest time entering the district meet.
Boyuk also qualified in an individual event. She placed second in the 100 freestyle (1:00.97) giving her the 11th fastest time heading into the district meet.
For Edison, Leila Cable qualified for the district meet in four events – one individual and all three relays.
On the individual side, the junior finished ninth in the 100 breaststroke (1:26.59) to qualify for the district meet. Her time was the 30th fastest out of all of the sectional meets.
On the relay side, Cable was joined on all three relay teams by Layla White, Gracie Dray and Gwendolyn Stine. First, the foursome finished sixth at the sectional meet in the 200 freestyle relay (2:02.33) to give them the 20th fastest time heading into the district meet. Next, the team placed eighth in the 400 freestyle relay (4:44.52) for the 18th fastest time entering the district meet. Finally, the girls placed eighth in the 200 medley relay (2:22.43) giving them the 24th fastest time at all of the sectional meets.
Catholic Central did not have a girl qualify for the district meet in an individual event, nor did the Crusaders have any of their three relay teams qualify.
The district meet is scheduled to be held Friday down at the Ohio University Aquatic Center in Athens.
