Some 47 local players honored by OPSMA

Big Red’s Santino, Mike Haney, McShan, Forte, Toronto’s Tucker, Creek’s Walker, Eft, Edison’s Smyth earn top honors on East District awards lists

The Ohio Prep Sports Media Association All-East District basketball teams were announced on Thursday, and several local players and coaches were among those receiving the highest recognition.

The annual lists are voted on by members of the OPSMA in the district based on regular season performances. A statewide panel will select the All-Ohio teams, which will be announced later this month.

This season was the second using the new seven division format for basketball.

Out of the 47 locals recognized on the lists, five local coaches and three standout local players were among those receiving the top honors.

TOP COACHES

•Big Red’s Mike Haney was named the Division III boys basketball Co-Coach of the Year after guiding Big Red to a 21-1 regular season and the first OVAC championship for the program since 2014. It is the second-straight year he received the honor.

•Toronto’s Sean Tucker was named the Division VI boys basketball Coach of the Year after guiding the Red Knights to a school-record 19-3 regular season mark and winning the program’s first OVAC title in 35 years.

•Big Red’s Angie Forte was the Division III girls basketball Co-Coach of the Year after leading Big Red to a school-record 21-1 regular season and the program’s first OVAC title in 13 years.

•Indian Creek head coach Steve Eft was voted the Division IV girls basketball Co-Coach of the Year after leading the Redskins to a 17-5 regular season and their fourth-straight OVAC Class 4A Championship. He is also a repeat winner having won the award last season as well.

•Edison head coach Mark Smyth was honored as the Division V girls basketball Coach of the Year after guiding the Wildcats to a 19-2 regular season, their best mark since 2002-03, and a school-record setting 17-straight wins to start the season.

TOP PLAYERS

•Big Red junior standout Santino Haney was named the Division III boys Player of the Year after averaging 22.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, 6.4 assists and 3.8 steals per game. He has eclipsed the 1,000-career point mark already and has a chance to set Big Red’s scoring record next season.

•Big Red senior standout and Clarion University signee Nylah McShan was named the Division III girls Player of the Year after averaging 20.4 points, 10.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 3.6 steals per game. A four-year starter at Big Red, McShan developed into an all-around player and led Steubenville to a record-setting season. She finishes her career with 1,411 points and 700 rebounds, nearly having a career average of a double-double.

•Indian Creek junior Kaydence Walker voted the Division IV girls Co-Player of the Year after averaging 18.2 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.8 steals. Walker stepped into a bigger role this season after losing multiple starters to graduatuon and has helped lead the Redskins back to the regionals for a second-straight year.

BOYS

DIVISION III

Also recognized from Big Red on the first team along with Santino Haney was senior multi-sport star Cole Bowers, who averaged 14.6 points per game.

Senior Tre’von Wiggins was a second team selection after averaging 12.9 points. Jermaine Moore, Landon Bowers and Josiah Rea were special mention selections.

DIVISION IV

Indian Creek senior Nishon White, a Robert Morris football commit, was a first team selection after averaging 18.9 points and 14 rebounds.

Indian Creek senior Evan McGrew (8.5 points) and Edison senior Bryce Rogers (12.5 points) were third team selections.

Edison’s Kyle Long and Creek’s Caden Saffle were special mentions.

DIVISION V

Harrison Central senior Bryson Kamarec was named to the first team after averaging 18 points per game.

Fellow Huskies senior Brady Hyre (8.1 points) and Buckeye Local senior Rylan Walker (10.1 points) were third team picks.

Harrison Central’s Lance Smith and Buckeye Local’s Haden Wilhelm and Kyle Kirkland were special mentions.

DIVISION VI

In addition to his coach’s honor, Toronto senior Austin Buchanan was voted to the first team after averaging 17.8 points per game this season.

Red Knights junior Colt Joynson was a second team pick after averaging 12.9 points per game, while Brady Fair, Brody Winters and Michael Henry were special mentions.

DIVISION VII

Catholic Central sophomore Rahim Mitchell was a first team selection by the panel after averaging 19.5 points per game this season.

The Crusaders’ Kolbe Krupp and Michael Fabbro were special mentions selections.

GIRLS

DIVISION III

In addition to Forte and McShan’s honors, Phynyx Fleming, Big Red’s sophomore post, was a first team selection after averaging 10.3 points per game.

Fellow sophomore Lucy Saccoccia was a second team pick after averaging 9.8 points, as was senior Bailee Beall, who averaged 8.3 points.

Big Red freshman Mikah Taylor was a special mention.

DIVISION IV

In addition to the honors for Eft and Walker, Indian Creek senior Riley Sadler was a second team selection averaging 10.6 points and 11 rebounds this season, as was Redskins junior Gracie Klinesmith, who averaged 9.6 points.

Indian Creek senior Gabby Taylor was a special mention along with Harrison Central’s Kara Blackburn and Mikayla Pelegreen.

DIVISION V

Edison senior Sophia Henderson was a first team selection after averaging 14 points and surpassing the 1,000 mark for her career.

Wildcats junior Abigail Carpenter was a second team selection after averaging 16 points and nine rebounds, as was fellow junior Abigail Boka, who averaged 9.5 points and 6.2 assists.

Edison Lacie Pelley and Buckeye Local’s Brooke Driscoll were special mentions.

DIVISION VII

Catholic Central senior Mary Rohde (12 points, 12.7 rebounds) and Toronto junior Jayna Reeves (17 points) were first team selections by the committee.

Central junior Mara Delaney (14 points) and Red Knights junior Josey Dickinson (9.6 points) were second team picks.

The Crusaders’ Aurie Hoover and Shya Garcia were special mentions.
