RICHMOND -- The Edison softball team’s bats heated up with the sunshine.
Edison scored at least one run in all four innings in which it batted en route to defeating rival Indian Creek, 15-3, via mercy rule in four-and-a-half innings Saturday afternoon out at the Edison Unified Sports Complex.
“The girls played really hard,” Edison (3-1) head coach McKenzie Morrison said. “It was a full team effort. We had 13 hits. Bristol (Leanza) pitched a good game, and we were able to get some of our younger girls at-bats.”
The Wildcats outhit the Redskins, 13-2, and the Silver-and-Black collected seven extra-base hits in the game, including six doubles, and one home run.
The victors recorded three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the early lead before taking on four more runs in the second to make the score 7-0. Edison added another run in the third to increase its advantage to 8-0 before tacking on seven more in the fourth to extend their advantage to 15-0.
Indian Creek scored three runs in the fifth, but it was not enough to extend the game.
Both teams used two pitchers in the game.
Bristol Leanza started in the circle for Edison and she picked up the win. She struck out three and walked three in four innings of work. Gwen Stine came on and pitched the top of the fifth. She struck out one, while walking four.
Maggie Blackburn started and took the loss for the Redskins. She struck out three and walked two in her two innings of work. She was replaced by Tori Gross, who pitched the final two innings. She struck out two and walked two.
The Wildcats received contributions offensively from every player throughout their lineup.
Individually, Alivia Hanlin delivered a single and two doubles while driving in one, Abby Boka belted a home run and ended the game with two RBI and Bella Cronin contributed a single, a double and three RBI. Also, Lydia Moore, Chloe Peckens and Leanza all tallied a double and an RBI, Ari Wiedaman added a single and two RBI and Mady Cornell, Bailey Natcher and Paige Somerville all picked up a single.
“They were on fire hitting the ball,” Morrison said. “Hopefully, that continues Monday.”
For the visitors, Olivia Hollenbeck and Riley Sadler each recorded a single, while Payton Rath, Kylie Dray and Aziaih Ade all produced an RBI.
Edison bounced back after suffering its first loss to Sandy Valley, 10-5, Wednesday on the road.
“Basically, it was back to business,” Morrison said. “They knew what they had to do. They work hard at practice. They got back after it.”
Edison is scheduled to play Route 43 foe Carrollton at 5 p.m. today at home.
“I know they have a really-good pitcher,” Morrison said. “They are a good team. We are excited to play them.”
Indian Creek is slated to play Madonna at 5 p.m. today at home.
