Bears start fast, get big win over Edison

NEW MANCHESTER — A few days can make a big difference.

After dropping a game to OVAC 4A leading Edison on the road last week, Oak Glen came out swinging against the Wildcats Monday afternoon and raced away with an 11-1, run rule victory on the Suzanne Smith Field of Dreams.

“We challenged the girls to come out and hit,” Oak Glen head coach Sherrie Garner said. “We did not hit enough when we played Edison last week, we were just kind of flat. Today we wanted to make sure we did what we were capable of doing and put the ball in play. When we did put the ball in play over there, they made some good plays, they have a good defense. But, today, it was a better day for us.

“We hit will, we played defense well, we pitched well. It was just a really good day for us, and we needed that with where the OVAC standings are. It was just a solid game overall. They’re a good team and a nice test for us, it’s good for us to be able to split with them.”

The Golden Bears (7-4) plated seven runs in the first inning, five before Edison (7-2) was able to record the first out, and opened an 11-0 lead before the Wildcats got on the board.

Mattie Carney fired a five inning complete game, striking out five without a walk. Her lone blemish was an Alivia Hanlin solo homer in the fourth, though it was not enough to extend the game.

Mikalyn Balch had three hits, Carney helped her own cause with a double, single and three RBIs, battery mate Neveah Heath had a double, single and an RBI and Brayley Lash had a pair of base knocks and drove in a run.

All told, Oak Glen’s 12 hits came from seven different players and their 11 RBIs came from seven different players.

Facing a team they beat 5-2 just four days prior and could see again in the OVAC tournament next month, Edison coach McKenzie Morrison was not happy with the way her team came out to the start Monday’s game.

“We didn’t show up to play today and it showed in every way possible,” she said. “But, we’re going to squash it and get ready for the next one. Oak Glen is a great team, they were crushing the ball and hitting it where we weren’t. They showed up to play and we didn’t and that can’t happen, especially when you’re playing a good team.

“We hope to see them again toward the end of the season.”
