Cadile leads Big Red to senior night win over Creek
STEUBENVILLE — Sophomore Isabella Cadile stole the show for the Big Red softball team on senior night.
Cadile struck out five without walking a batter en route to the win inside the circle, and she tallied two triples and four RBIs at the plate leading Big Red to a 14-2 victory against rival Indian Creek Thursday night up at the Crimson Complex.
“It was a good night for the girls,” first-year Big Red (10-5) head coach April Minniefield said. “The seniors came out and played well. We’re excited for them. This was a confidence booster for the girls. They did a good job. It is a good win.”
Big Red is the latest in a long line of tough teams the Redskins have faced this season.
“This will only make us stronger,” first-year Indian Creek (5-15) head coach Amber Scott said. “I thought we hit the ball really well. The score is not an indication of how we hit the ball. Big Red is a really-good team. They’re fast. They got the key hits, and we didn’t. That’s softball. I saw a lot of good things. The girls keep battling. The girls don’t give up.”
Big Red delivered 14 hits in the game, and erupted for six runs on seven hits in the bottom of the first inning to take control of the game.
“That definitely helped,” Minniefield said. “That gave us a nice cushion. A good thing is our girls did not fall asleep. They kept going and scored more runs. That made it even better.”
The victors recorded at least one run in all four innings in which they batted.
Offensively for Big Red, Gina Smith tallied three singles and an RBI, Emily Tuttle collected a single, a double and an RBI and Sophia Zorne produced two singles and an RBI. Also, Sagan Smarrella, Riley Zorne, Joslynn Waugh and Kaliyah Chamberlain all delivered a single and an RBI and Sadie Edwards ended up with a single. Edwards also reached base twice on errors.
For Indian Creek, Riley Sadler recorded a single, a double and two RBIs, Tori Gross tallied a double and Kylie Dray and Aziaih Wade added singles.
After Big Red scored six runs in the first, the Red-and-Gold had big chance to cut into their deficit as the Redskins recorded three-straight singles to load the bases with no outs, however, Cadile retired the next three batters to escape the inning unscathed.
“We had the bases loaded, but we could not get a run in,” Scott said. “We hit the ball. I think we only had two strikeouts looking — two backward Ks. The girls are swinging the bats. That’s all I can ask. They continue to fight. When you get down, you can continue to fight, or you can just lay down but our girls continue to fight.
“We’re young. I say it all the time, but we’re young. We’re growing. The girls have to learn to move on after a bad inning. You have to go on and finish. We either start strong and finish slow, or we start slow and finish strong.
“Big Red is a really-good team. They hit the ball. They did a good job. That’s softball.”
Big Red tacked on two more runs in the second to increase their advantage to 8-0. The visitors got on the board with a pair of runs in the third, but the hosts answered right back with a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 9-2.
After Cadile shut down Indian Creek in the fourth, Big Red plated five more runs in the fourth to bring the run-rule into play. The Redskins got a runner on base in the fifth, however, a double play started by Edwards at short ended the inning and the game.
“She settled down,” Minniefield said about Cadile. “We want her to be close, and let us play defense behind her.”
Prior to the start of the game, Big Red honored the seniors for both teams. The six Big Red seniors are Addison Meyer, Edwards, Smarrella, Tuttle, Waugh and Sophia Zorne.
“I was waiting for this class,” Minniefield. “I was waiting for these girls. It means a lot on senior night. I coached some of these girls in middle school, and it is nice to be able to coach them in high school. They are a good group of girls. They have grown up with me. I am going to miss them. They are a special group.”
Indian Creek is scheduled to play Carrollton at 5 p.m. today on the road. The Redskins defeated the Warriors, 7-1, March 31 at home.
Big Red is slated to play Weir at 5:30 p.m. today on the road up at the Roberta “Birdie” DeFrancis Softball Field.
