Creek bounces back with a huge win

WINTERSVILLE — Some predictions do come true.

Following her team’s loss Monday to Madonna, first-year Indian Creek softball coach Amber Scott said, “This is a new week, and I think we are going to have a breakthrough.”

That breakthrough came Tuesday against Carrollton.

Trailing the Warriors, 1-0, going into the bottom of the fourth inning, the Redskins erupted for seven runs to rally for a 7-1 victory at home.

“Madonna prepared us for today,” Scott said. “They are a solid team, and we played another solid team today. Our girls never gave up. One of the umpires said, ‘This is not the same team I saw last week.’ We have been fighting. We haven’t given up.

“Our pitchers threw strikes, our defense picked up our pitchers and we put the bat on the ball. Those are the three things you need to do to win.

“It was nice for one of our senior leaders to really come through. Riley started things off with that home run, and the rest of the girls followed her. She started it with that home run, and we were able to continue it.”

After the visitors scored a run in the fourth to take the 1-0 lead, the hosts answered right back in the home half of the inning.

Catcher Riley Sadler led off the inning, and the senior launched a solo home run over the fence in left field as the ball came to a rest near the scoreboard to knot the score at 1-all.

Indian Creek ended up loading the bases with two outs. First Azaiah Ade singled with one out, and then Tori Gross drew a walk and Khila Chamberlain reached on an infield single to load the bases. Then, Aaliyah Duke — the team’s leadoff batter — was hit by a pitch to plate Ade with the game-winning run giving the Redskins a 2-1 lead. Olivia Hollenbeck followed by reaching on an error allowing Gross to score to increase Indian Creek’s advantage to 3-1. Then, Chamberlain scored on an error to make the score 4-1 before Payton Rath plated Duke and Hollenbeck to make it a 6-1 ballgame before Sadler tripled scoring Rath to extend her team’s advantage to 7-1.

“We were done, 1-0, and the girls came in and said, ‘We are still in this,'” Scott said. “We had that nice play at third. Kylie Dray was able to scoop up that ball, and she fired it home to get that girl. They were able to see plays we have been working on work. That was a boost to our morale. We were able to make plays we have been talking about.

“We have talked about our schedule being hard, and I think our schedule being hard has helped us get better. We play again tomorrow. Hopefully, the same team shows up. We want to keep it going. We want to keep the faith.”

Carrollton was able to get out of the inning on a lineout to left, however, the damage had already been done.

Heading into the top of the fifth, Scott switched pitchers from Gross — the starter — to Maggie Backburn, who ended up pitching the final three innings. Gross picked up the win.

“That was my plan,” Scott said about using two pitchers in the game. “I wanted to throw something different at them. I wanted to bring the other one. If you noticed, I was starting one and then bringing in the other one, so I thought, let’s flip up. We started the other one and brought in the other.

“We have made a lot of changes. We have changed how we warm up. We have changed people’s positions on the field. We have moved kids around. The girls have picked each other up. They are playing together as a team.”

The Warriors (1-3) also used two pitchers.

Reagan Schneiders started in the circle, and she was saddled with the loss. Schneiders struck out four and walked two in her four innings of work. She was replaced to start the fifth by Emilee Shepherd, who started the game in left, while Schneiders moved to third base. Shepherd struck out four without walking a batter in her two innings of relief work.

“That was a big win for our seniors,” Scott said. “Last year, the first game was a battle back-and-forth. Then, the kind of killed us. It was a nice win for our seniors. They wanted to win this one.”

The locals outhit the girls from Carroll County, 7-5.

Outside of the fourth inning, Duke and Rath delivered singles for the hosts.

Offensively for Carrollton, Schneiders singled and doubled, Laiken Spilker produced an RBI double and Gracelyn Folk and Shepherd each finished with a single.

The visitors had one girl thrown out at the plate and two thrown out at third, including Spilker, who was thrown out trying to stretch her double into a triple, bringing the inning to an end.

Jefferson County has not been kind to Carrollton as the Warriors have lost back-to-back games on back-to-back days to county opponents. Tuesday, Edison defeated Carrollton, 8-4, out at the Edison Unified Sports Complex.

Weather permitting, Indian Creek is scheduled to play Brooke at 5 p.m. today at home.

Carrollton is slated to play Fairless at 5 p.m. Friday at home.
