Mistakes, stranded runners cost Madonna in OVAC semi loss

Andrew Grimm RUNNING — Madonna's Reno Fuscardo races to third base after one of his three hits against Trinity on Monday in the OVAC semifinals.

WEIRTON — In big games, errors tend to find a way to cost you and missed opportunities seem to find a way to bit you.

The Madonna baseball team was on the wrong side of both things in Monday night’s OVAC Class A semifinal loss.

The No. 2 seed Blue Dons committed six errors, leading to five unearned runs, and stranded a dozen men on the bases, including a runner at third in all but one inning, in a 7-6 loss to visiting third-seeded Trinity Christian.

“We had so many opportunities,” Madonna head coach TJ Miller said. “We struck out 12 times at the plate and that’s not going to win you very many ball games. We were given opportunities to get back into the game and just weren’t taking advantage of it. We left 10-plus guys on base, I think eight in scoring position, and didn’t get them in. And, we had six errors and several mental errors on stuff we consistently work on in practice every day. We just didn’t play very well.

“We have a young ball club, we knew there would be growing pains. We have a lot to work on. We still have time to get there before regionals, these guys will keep working and getting better, but we have a lot of stuff to clean up before then.

“Hat’s off to Trinity, they have a great program and a very classy program, hopefully its a great game between them and Cameron.”

Trinity will take on top seed Cameron, a 10-3 winner over Frontier on Monday, in the championship game.

Madonna (6-8) trailed 4-0 in the top of the second and 5-2 through four, but rallied back to knot the score in the fifth.

The Warriors (8-6), though, re-took the lead in the top of the seventh on a throwing error with two outs and added another run an at-bat later, a run that proved to be pivotal.

Tyler Dillon’s RBI single in the home half cut the margin back to one and the Dons got runners on the corners with two outs, but a fly out ended the rally. They had left runners on second and third in the first three innings and in the sixth.

Andrew Grimm MAKING A PLAY — Madonna's Camden Michael makes a throw to first for an out.

Trinity scored three runs in the top of the second after taking a 1-0 lead in the first on an error. Their third and fourth runs also scored on errors.

For Madonna, Reno Fuscardo had three hits on the day, while Brennan Gray had two hits and two RBIs, Sam Brooks had two hits and Tyler Dillon had an RBI.

Fuscardo fired the last three innings in relief, striking out two and walking two in being saddled with the tough-luck loss. Starter Evan Kacmarek fired the first four inning, striking out eight and walking four in a no-decision.

Madonna is slated to host Bridgeport today.
