Utt reaches milestone in Weir win

WEIRTON — Weir High standout pitcher Eliza Utt reached another milestone on Thursday night in helping lead the Red Riders to a 7-0 victory over visiting East Liverpool.

Utt struck out 11 batters in tossing a complete game, one-hit shutout, and in the process, surpassed the 600 mark for career strikeouts.

She did not walk a batter and the only hit she allowed was a single. At the plate, she had two hits and four RBIs to lead the way there, too.

Also for Weir, Bella Weber had a double and an RBI and Lexi Shockley had a single.

The Red Riders (14-6) are back at home today to host Big Red at 5:30 p.m.

Oak Glen splits at JM

GLEN DALE — The Oak Glen softball team split a twinbill on the road at John Marshall on Thursday, dropping the opener 8-3 before bouncing back for a 6-4 win in the nightcap.

Oak Glen (14-7) got two hits and two RBIs from Danica Holden in the early game, while Mikalyn Balch and Mattie Carney each had two hits, Carney and Macie Hartung hitting doubles. Carney struck out six and walked three in the circle.

In the second game, the Bears battled back from an early 4-1 deficit, scoring the last five runs of the game to earn the split.

Holden had a double, single and three RBIs, Neveah Heath tallied a double, single and an RBI, while Carney and Brayley Lash each tallied a pair of hits.

Holden took the ball in Game 2 and spun a complete game, striking out eight and walking two in the win.

The Bears host Harrison Central today in a key game in the OVAC Class 4A tournament race.

Panthers pull away from CCHS

CONNORVILLE — The Buckeye Local softball team used a nine-run fourth inning to pull away from visiting Catholic Central after some early back-and-forth and take a 14-4 win over the Crusaders.

Addie Jones had a triple, single and two RBIs, Danika Bauknecht tallied a double, single and three RBIs, Lexi Neilly had a double, single and an RBI and Jadyn Pleise recorded a double, triple and three RBIs.

Bauknecht and Karlie Lander each struck out five in splitting time in the circle.

For Central, Gracie Fink, Genna Free and Miriam Free each had a hit and Lexi Lathem struck out five.

The Panthers (9-7) host Union Local on Monday, while the Crusaders (1-17) host Valley today.

Bruins top Cambridge

WELLSBURG — The Brooke softball team scored the first five runs and did not look back on Thursday, taking a 9-1 victory over Cambridge at home.

The Bruins (11-13) got a double, two singles and an RBI from Avery Rado, while E Teller had two hits and three RBIs, Jazmyn Wood had a double, single and an RBI and Eden McKinney had two hits.

Rado struck out three and did not walk a batter in the circle.

Brooke visits Bridgeport today.

Weir comes back to top Edison

RICHMOND — After falling behind by a couple of runs early, the Weir High baseball team came back to edge Edison, 3-2, on the road Thursday.

The Red Riders (9-12) got a gem on the mound from senior Cayden Braswell, who shook off two first inning runs and did not allow another the rest of the way, striking out seven in a complete game victory and held the Wildcats (10-4) to three hits.

Teddy Glyptis, Niko Glass and Matt Geer each had two hits in the win, while Glass, Liam Williamson and Jonathan Horstman each drove in a run.

For Edison, Evan Kimmerle had two doubles and two RBIs, while Kyle Long sent the distance on the mound for the tough-luck loss, striking out one and walking one.

Weir High host Burgettstown today, while Edison has the weekend off before a trip to Martins Ferry on Tuesday.

Madonna falls to UL

WEIRTON — The Madonna baseball team dropped a 6-4 decision to Union Local on Thursday at home in a rematch after the Dons topped the Jets on the road earlier in the week.

Madonna (6-7) got two hits from Reno Fuscardo and an RBI each from Sam Brooks and Luke Wingett. Fuscardo also struck out four in five innings on the mound.

Madonna visits Valley on Saturday.

Crusaders fall to Cameron

STEUBENVILLE — The Catholic Central baseball team’s quest for their first back-to-back wins of the season got off to a promising start against Cameron as the teams were tied through two innings at Vaccaro Field on Thursday, but the visiting Dragons scored six of the last seven runs to take an 11-6 win.

Luke Bryan had a pair of hits and an RBI for Central, while Ty Symington had a double and four RBIs.

Central visits Buckeye Local on Monday.
