STEUBENVILLE -- The Big Red golf team added another victory to its early season tally on Monday, though it was shorter than expected.
Steubenville’s golfers took on Toronto in what was scheduled to be an 18-hole duel match at Steubenville Country Club, but the storms that moved through the area forced the match to be changed to nine holes.
After nine holes of action, Big Red fired a team score of 162, which was 24 strokes better than the 186 carded by the Red Knights.
“The team continues to put together a strong start to the year and there is plenty of room for improvement as we head deeper into the season,” Big Red coach Joe Garay said.
Big Red was again led by match medalist Andrew Matzorkis, who fired a low score of 34 on the day.
Jaggar Rawson and Noah Kokiko both carded a score of 41, while Pat Jenkins and Joel Elliott each turned in a score of 46. Gino Scaffidi was close behind with a score of 47.
Toronto also had a tie in their scores as both Joey Westlake and Hank Bodnar carded scores of 43, Steven O’halek shot a 46, Landon Danko a 54, Will Sutherin a 55 and Blake Wilson a 56.
The victory improved Big Red’s duel record to 11-2 on the season.
Steubenville is back in action on Wednesday with a road nine-hole match against Beaver Local at Turkana Golf Course. Big Red then has a quick turnaround to take on perennial Division II power Perry on Thursday back at Steubenville Country Club.
“It’s a big early season match up to see how we stand and where we can get better,” Garay said.
Toronto has an 18-hole match on the road today against the Brooke Bruins.
