BIG RED FALLS IN BATTLE AT THE VILLE
STEUBENVILLE – The Big Red golf team hosted perennial Ohio high school golf powerhouse Perry on Thursday in the inaugural “Battle at the Ville.”
Big Red’s golfers were competitive with the Pirates in the 18-hole duel match at the Steubenville Country Club, but dropped a 312-343 decision.
The loss was Big Red’s second in as many days but just their fourth overall of the season as their overall record stands at 11-4, now 4-2 in one-on-one duel matches.
Perry’s Ben Dame fired an impressive score of 73, just one-over-par, to earn match medalist.
Big Red got a four-over 76 from Andrew Matzorkis, a 78 from Jaggar Rawson, a 94 from Noah Kokiko, a 95 from Joel Elliott, a 97 from Max Henderson and a 102 from Pat Jenkins.
Big Red has the weekend off to regroup before a nine-hole duel with Edison on Monday back at Steubenville Country Club.
“Every season has ups and downs and this is a great opportunity for our team to respond,” Big Red coach Joe Garay said. “We’ll learn from these matches, regroup and come back ready to compete on Monday.”
WEIR TOPS OAK GLEN AND MADONNA
NEW CUMBERLAND – The Weir High golf team battled past a couple of local rivals on the golf course on Thursday, topping Oak Glen and Madonna in a tri-match at Woodview Golf Course.
The pair of victories make the Red Riders 2-0 on the young season.
Weir High carded a team score of 159 in the nine-hole match, led by match medalist Guy Meneely with a 37.
He was followed closely by Evan Baker with a 38, Aiden Ferguson with a 41 and Landon Donaldson with a 43.
Oak Glen turned in a team score of 171 with a 41 from Maddox Chaffin, a 43 from Zach Jenkins, a 43 from Jack Cline and a 44 from Gannon Cline.
Madonna carded a 182, Evan Kaczmarek leading the way with a 40, Justin Kaczmarek turning in a 45, Xavier Taylor also carding a 45 and Sophia Quattrochi turning in a 52.
The Red Riders are back in action today against five other teams in an 18-hole event at The Links at Woodridge in Mineral Wells.
