STEUBENVILLE – The Beall and Bowers show continues to draw big ratings for the Big Red boys’ soccer team.
Chase Beall tallied a hat trick and two assists, while Landon Bowers delivered a hat trick and one assist leading Big Red to a 6-0 victory against rival Weir Tuesday night on Reno Saccoccia Field inside historic Harding Stadium.
“We had the ball a lot,” Big Red (9-3-1) head coach Greg Bowers said. “They did a good job in the back. They had seven or eight guys behind the ball. We frustrated ourselves trying to kick the ball through their defense.”
The boys in red netted three goals in each half. Landon Bowers recorded two goals in the first half, while Beall collected two in the second.
“We competed,” Weir (3-10-2) head coach Adam Welsh said. “We expected them to play well. We did some good things. We’re young, we’re inexperienced and when you play a quality team like that, that is what is going to happen. We fought. I am proud of our guys’ effort. We had some breakdowns, and when you play teams like that they are going to take advantage of them. We will learn from this. We will get better.”
Joel Elliott and Cedric Peckens each produced an assist for the hosts.
“We pressured them the whole time,” Coach Bowers said. “We have to learn to be patient. We have to be able to finish. Tonight, was not one of our better nights at that, but those things are going to happen occasionally.”
JJ Lamantia made one save in goal for the hosts.
Carter Blue made eight saves in goal for the visitors from Hancock County.
“Our young guys are progressing very nicely,” Welsh said. “We had a good freshman class come in. We are still inexperienced in the other classes. We are going to keep working. We are going to build off this. We are going to build something.”
Big Red continued to take advantage of set pieces as the victors found the back of the net off a corner in the first half. Beall took the kick and sent the ball into the box where Landon Bowers was able to get a head on it and knock it into the back of the net giving Big Red a 3-0 lead.
In the second half, Beall scored on a kick from 45-yards out to complete his hat trick with 12:03 left to play in the game.
“Weir is young,” Coach Bowers said. “They are scrappy. They play good defense. They possess the ball. They play the right way. Their coach is doing a great job.”
Landon Bowers capped off his hat trick with 7:10 remaining to be played bringing the running clock into play.
Weir is scheduled to play St. Clairsville at 6 p.m. Thursday down at Red Devil Stadium.
“We have a couple of tough games this week,” Welsh said. “We are going to come ready to go.”
Big Red is slated to play city-rival Catholic Central at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon at home in the annual Together We Care event.
