Creek captures momentum to sweep Weir

WINTERSVILLE -- The Indian Creek volleyball team has been working on keeping momentum and serving. They showed improvement in both categories on Monday evening.
After getting down early in the first set, Creek went on a big run to come back and win it, then had big runs in the second and third sets to complete a sweep of visiting Weir High on Coach D Court.
“We definitely got the momentum,” Indian Creek head coach Crystal Hammack said. “We started off in the hole a little in the first set and said we just need to start playing our game, and that’s what we did. We told them we needed to pass, set and swing and they came out and performed.
“The energy is contagious, once one girl starts diving and they see a couple fall, everyone gets in on it and it starts falling into place.”
The Redskins (4-13) 13-1 run to close the third set and seal the deal on the victory featured a run of three-straight aces from Nina Householder and four of the last six points on aces from Kylie Dray.
In total, Creek had 17 aces in the match, getting them from four different players.
“We have really been working on serving aggressively,” Hammack said. “Sometimes we miss some when we’re being aggressive, but you are going to score a few that way, too. It is always nice when you can get your servers in a rhythm and they hit their spots between people. We have been working hard on that so it was good to see.”
After the Red Riders (7-11) had opened up a 16-6 lead with an 8-1 run after starting the match with a 7-1 run in the opening set, Creek rattled off a 12-2 spurt out of a timeout to tie the set and ended up winning it 25-21, closing on a 19-5 run.
From there, Weir High never fully seemed to get the momentum back.
“We’re playing out of rotation this week and it’s a tough week for us, we knew coming in that Creek was going to play us hard and hustle,” Weir head coach Fran Capaldi said. “They’re a five-set team, so we knew they would play hard.
“It comes down to confidence, we need to have confidence even if we’re playing out of rotation. We have skilled girls, they just need to find their confidence. Once we lost it, it was hard for them to find it again.
“We have to be able to adjust to adversity and be mentally tough in sets.”
The second set was closer throughout with one side going on any more than a 5-0 run until Creek pulled away out of a 17-all deadlock then hung on to take a 2-0 match lead with a 25-23 set win.
In the third set, it was again a tight battle early, deadlocked at 15-all after Householder’s run of aces. The Redskins then went on a 6-0 run before Dray’s aces extended the run and pushed Creek toward closing things out, which they did 25-16, scoring 13 of the final 14 points.
Householder tallied seven aces on the night to go with 10 digs, an assist and a kill. Dray finished with four aces, four blocks, three kills and three digs. Meghan Paoloemilio tallied five aces, seven assists, three kills and five digs, Kendal Canestraro recorded three kills and three blocks, Phoenyx Vines had 10 digs, three kills, two assists and an ace and Maddie Moran tallied three assists and six digs.
For the Red Riders, Gabby Sprouse tallied seven kills, four aces and 13 digs, Zoey Spencer had six kills and five digs, Ella Kaufman tallied 19 assists and six digs and Lauren Nagy finished with 16 digs and an ace.
