BROOKE WINS BIG IN HOME OPENER
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke football team is off to a 2-0 start thanks to big victory in its home opener on Friday night.
The Bruins rolled to a 56-6 win over visiting Cambridge on Paul “Bud” Billiard Field inside Brooke Memorial after starting the season with a win on the road and then having its bye week.
The Bruins defense started the scoring with a sack in the end zone for a safety, then Kamden Sperringer fired a 24-yard TD pass to Michael Gibson to make it 9-0.
Sperringer and Gibson connected again on an 11-yard TD, then, after the Bobcats (0-4) got on the board, Cole Bolen scored on a 15-yard run to make it 23-6 Bruins after one quarter.
In the second quarter, Rylan Figgs plunged in from a yard out, then Bolen added a 44-yard scoring run. Kayden Thomas scored on an 8-yard run to make it 43-6 Brooke at halftime.
Thomas added a 53-yard run and Figgs scored on a 56-yard run, both in the third quarter, to cap the scoring.
Sperringer finished 16 of 31 for 228 yards and rushed for 44 yards on three carries.
Bolen finished with 91 yards on the ground on nine carries, Figgs with 71 on four totes and Thomas with 62 yards on five carries.
Grant Yost hauled in four passes for 96 yards, while Gibson also had four catches for 48 yards and the two scores.
Brooke is back at home next week to host Indian Creek (2-2).
EDISON FALLS TO FERRY
RICHMOND -- Undefeated Martins Ferry kept its perfect record in tact, topping Edison 34-0 Friday night at the Edison Unified Sports Complex.
The Purple Riders (4-0) led 21-0 at halftime and kept the Wildcats (1-3) off the board the rest of the way.
Edison will look to bounce back next week when it visits Weir High (0-3).
MADONNA SUFFERS SETBACK
OAKLAND, Md. -- The Madonna football team’s long trip to Maryland Friday night resulted in a 54-0 loss to the Southern Rams.
The Blue Dons, now 1-2, will look to bounce back next week when they hit the road again to take on Conotton Valley.
PANTHERS FALL TO BARNESVILLE
CONNORVILLE -- The Buckeye Local football dropped a 48-7 decision to undefeated Barnesville at home at World War II Memorial Stadium on Friday night.
The Panthers (0-4) host Catholic Central next Friday.
SOUTH HARRISON DOWNS OAK GLEN
LOST CREEK -- South Harrison jumped out to a lead and did not look back, topping Oak Glen 54-14 on Friday night.
The Golden Bears (1-2) look to bounce back next week when they visit Toronto (4-0).
