HANNIBAL -- Coming off an emotional win in Week 1, the Oak Glen football team will take on River this week in a battle of unbeatens.
Oak Glen is playing this season with heavy hearts following he death of junior lineman Carter "Boo Boo" Pesacreta, who died in an offroad accident Aug. 21.
Pesacreta was 16-years-old.
Pesacreta's funeral was held last Thursday morning at Nixon Funeral Home in Newell. Several hours later, the Golden Bears took their home field to play their first game of the season against Hancock County rival Weir. The boys from the northern part of the county came ready to go, and they went on to shut out the Red Riders, 35-0, to maintain possession of the traveling Carl Hamill Trophy.
It was an emotional victory for the Golden Bears, and Oak Glen will look to carry its momentum over into this week's matchup against 2-0 River on the road. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Friday night down at Martin Flannery Field.
Sometimes following a big or an emotional win, teams have a letdown the next time the players step out onto the field. Oak Glen is looking to avoid that this week as it prepares to play its first Friday night game of the season.
The Golden Bears are looking to start off 2-0 for the second-straight season. Oak Glen won its first three games of the season last year before being shut out at home by Toronto in Week 4 of the West Virginia season.
The Golden Bears scored a touchdown in all four quarters against the Red-and-Black. Oak Glen scored its first two touchdowns on passes from quarterback Maddux Bowen to wide receiver Cameron Carter. Bowen ended up throwing for 198 yards and the two touchdowns in the win, while also rushing for 14 yards. Carter caught four passes for 59 yards and the two touchdowns in the win.
The final three touchdowns all came on the ground as running back Jacob Everett tallied three touchdowns on the night. Everett collected 95 yards and the three scores on just 10 carries.
As a team, the Golden Bears produced 188 yards on the ground on 30 carries.
This week's game will be the first home game of the season for the Pilots.
River opened the season with a 41-6 victory against Portsmouth Notre Dame via mercy before defeating Buckeye Local, 40-8, also via mercy rule down at World War II Memorial Stadium in Yorkville.
The boys from Monroe County won their first two games of the season last year before falling to county rival Monroe Central, 21-14, in Week 3 at home. The Pilots ended the season with a record of 5-5, however, the team failed to qualify for the playoffs in Ohio Division VII, Region 25.
