STEUBENVILLE – The time has come for the OVAC soccer tournament.
The Big Red boys’ and girls’ soccer teams have once again qualified for the annual OVAC Soccer Tournament. Both Big Red teams advanced to the tournament in Class 5A.
The Oak Glen boys’ and girl’s soccer teams also qualified for the annual tournament. The Golden Bears qualified in Class 4A.
The top four teams in each of the three classes qualified for the conference tournament.
The girls’ tournament is scheduled to get underway today with the semifinals in all three classes.
In Class 5A, No. 4 Big Red (5-4-1) will take on No. 1 seed and regular season champion Beaver Local (8-1) at 6:30 p.m. up at Pastore Field, while No. 2 seed University will take on No. 3 seed Wheeling Park at home.
The semifinal between Big Red and Beavers will be a rematch of a game played less than a week ago as Beaver Local defeated Big Red, 3-1, last Tuesday at home.
The Hawks defeated Big Red, 4-1, Sept. 5 on the road on Reno Saccoccia Field inside Harding Stadium. The girls from Jefferson County bounced back from that win by winning their next three games to move to 5-2-1 on the season. First, Big Red shut out Brooke, 10-0, on the road on Paul “Bud” Billiard Field inside Brooke Memorial Stadium. Then, Big Red defeated John Marshall, 9-1, Sept. 10 at home. Finally, Big Red defeated Philo, 3-2, Sept. 12 on the road.
Following Tuesday’s loss to Beaver Local, Big Red was defeated by Linsly, 2-1, Thursday on the road.
Big Red is not scheduled to play Wheeling Park this season.
The losers of the semifinals will meet Wednesday in the consolation final.
The winners of the semifinals will meet in the tournament final at 10 a.m. Saturday morning down at St. Clairsville’s Red Devil Stadium.
Wheeling Park defeated University, 4-0, to win the tournament title last season down at Wheeling Island Stadium.
Oak Glen (8-4) is the only local team to qualify for the tournament in Class 4A. The Golden Bears are the No. 4 seed.
Oak Glen is set to take on No. 1 seed St. Clairsville (10-2) at 5:30 p.m. on the road, while No. 2 seed Linsly will take on No. 3 seed Cambridge at home.
The semifinal between the Golden Bears and the Red Devils will be a rematch as the two team’s played Sept. 8 down at St. Clairsville. The girls from Belmont County came out on top in that one, 3-1.
The Cadets defeated the Golden Bears, 3-2, Sept. 12 on the road up at the Bears’ Den.
The Golden Bears have not played the Bobcats yet this season, however, Oak Glen is slated to play Cambridge at 6 p.m. Sept. 28 on the road.
The losers of the semifinals will meet in the consolation final Wednesday.
The winners of the semifinals will play in the tournament final at 10 a.m. Saturday morning up at Weir’s Jimmy Carey Stadium.
Beaver Local shut out St. Clairsville, 4-0, to win the tournament title last season down at Wheeling Island Stadium.
There is not a local team in the Class 1A-3A Tournament.
In the tournament, No. 1 seed Wheeling Central will take on No. 4 seed Shenandoah at home, while No. 2 seed United will take on No. 3 seed and Columbiana County rival Columbiana at home.
The losers of the semifinals will meet Wednesday in the consolation final.

Wheeling Central blanked Catholic Central, 7-0, to win the tournament title last season down at Wheeling Island Stadium.
The soccer committee has assigned games for teams that did not qualify for the tournament this season. The games must be played by the end of the season, and it is recommended the games be scheduled as soon as possible.
The assigned games are: Indian Creek at Catholic Central, Catholic Central at John Marshall, John Marshall at East Liverpool, East Liverpool at Weir, Weir at Harrison Central, Harrison Central at Magnolia, Magnolia at Union Local, Union Local at Edison, Edison at Brooke and Brooke at Indian Creek.
For the boys, five of the six semifinals will be played Tuesday with one being played Monday.
In Class 5A, No. 3 seed Big Red (7-2-1) will take on No. 2 seed Wheeling Park (9-0-2) at 6 p.m. Tuesday on the road, while No. 1 seed Beaver Local will take on No. 4 seed John Marshall the same day at home.
The meeting between Big Red and the Patriots will be a rematch from a game played last Tuesday at Harding Stadium. In that game, Wheeling Park rallied to defeat Big Red, 2-1.
Big Red and the Beavers played to a 4-4 tie Sept. 10 up at Pastore Field, while Big Red defeated shut out John Marshall, 8-0, two days later on the road.

The Patriots won the tournament title by defeating Big Red, 2-0, last season down at St. Clairsville.
Harrison Central and Oak Glen qualified for the tournament in Class 4A. The Huskies are the No. 3 seed, while the Golden Bears are the No. 4 seed.
In the semifinals, Oak Glen (5-4) will take on No. 1 seed Union Local (5-2-2) at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday on the road, while Harrison Central (5-3-2) will take on No. 2 seed St. Clairsville (6-4) at 7:30 p.m. Monday on the road.
The game between the Huskies and Red Devils’ will be the second part of a girls’ and boys’ doubleheader. The St. Clairville girls’ semifinal will be played at 5:30 with the boys’ game to follow.
The semifinal is scheduled to be the only meeting this season between the Golden Bears and the Jets. The other semifinal will feature the first meeting this season between the Huskies and the Red Devils. The two Buckeye 8 rivals are slated to play at 6 p.m. Oct. 6 back down at St. Clairsville.
Harrison Central is scheduled to play Union Local at 6 p.m. Sept. 29 at home out at Wagner Field.

Catholic Central once again qualified for the tournament in Class 1A-3A. The Crusaders are the No. 3 seed.
In the semifinals, Catholic Central (3-2-4) will take on No. 2 seed Columbiana (7-2-1) at 7 p.m. Tuesday on the road, while No. 4 seed Shenandoah will play No. 1 seed Wheeling Central Tuesday on the road.
The semifinal will be a rematch for the Crusaders and the Clippers as the two teams played to a scoreless tie last Thursday up at Columbiana.
Wheeling Central shut out Catholic Central, 5-0, Sept. 8 on the road at the Tony Recinella Soccer Field. The Crusaders and the Zeps are not scheduled to meet during the regular season.
