YORKVILLE -- Buckeye Local's plight during last week's 61-6 loss to Shadyside cane be summed up in one stat. One.
The Panthers managed only 64 yards off offense against the Tigers' stout defense. Of that total, 59 yards came on a scoring rush from quarterback Tyler Schubert in the third quarter. The rest of the game? Five yards.
Buckeye has managed to reach the end zone in all three of its losses, but consistent offense is still a work in progress.
This week's opponent may be its toughest yet.
Barnesville (3-0) enters the contest after shutting down Bellaire's high-powered attack in a 33-0 victory on the Shamrocks home field.
Now the 'Rocks head to World War II Memorial Stadium to yet again flex both their offensive and defensive muscles.
Barnesville is led by one of the area's top offensive talents in senior running back Trey Toliver.
Toliver ran for 171 yards and four touchdowns against Bellaire. Making waves since his freshman season, Toliver is a 5-10, 205-pound combination of size, speed and power.
He's a question few teams have been able to solve during his career, including Buckeye.
Last season, the Panthers traveled to Barnesville and were rewarded with a 56-0 defeat for their efforts.
Now head coach Hayden Daley and company must devise some sort of strategy to slow down Toliver while trying to find a way to dent one of the Ohio Valley'Tols most consistent and unyielding defenses the last few seasons.
Buckeye will also need to do a better job of taking care of the ball as turnovers led to easier than necessary touchdowns for Shadyside in the first half; turnovers that Barnesville won't hesitate to capitalize on.
Toliver isn't the Rocks only weapon.
Quarterback Even Wells is both a competent passes and capable runner.
Against Bellaire, Wells ran for 80 yards on eight carries while connecting on five of his six passes for 52 yards.
Buckeye has a home date vs. Catholic Central followed by a road matchup with Oak Glen and its own talented running back to follow.
There are few, if any holes, in Buckeye Local's schedule this season.
