Park fends off Big Red in four sets

STEUBENVILLE -- The Big Red volleyball battled, but Wheeling Park was up the challenge.
The Patriots were victorious in the first two sets to take control, however, Big Red bounced back to win the third to stay in the match. Big Red scored first in the fourth set, however, Wheeling Park regrouped and regained control as the Patriots went on to defeat Big Red, 25-23, 25-18, 18-25, 25-13, Tuesday night inside the Crimson Center.
“You can’t be mad at them,” Big Red (2-2) head coach Logan Colabella said about her team. “They don’t give up. Being down 2-0, they could have just said that’s it were done, but they did not give up. We have some things to work on, and we will get those fixed. We have to prevent those big runs.”
Early on, the first set was back-and-forth. The visitors were the first team to 10 points as they scored to take a 10-9 lead. The Patriots (4-3-1) increased their advantage out to three points, however, the girls from Jefferson County battled back and tied the score. The visitors regained the lead as they were the first to 15, and they built a four-point advantage causing Colabella to call timeout. Wheeling Park held the lead, but the girls in black battled back and fought off a couple of set points, however, the Patriots scored the final point of the set to hold on a two-point victory to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Wheeling Park produced the first three points of the second set, but the girls from Jefferson County fought back to knot the score at 4. The Patriots regained the lead, but Big Red battled back once again to level the score at 8. The hosts took the lead at 9-8, however, the victors responded and took a 12-9 lead resulting in Colabella calling a timeout. Big Red stormed back and regained the lead at 14-13, forcing Wheeling Park head coach Samantha Gentile to call a timeout.
Gentile’s timeout proved to be effective as the Patriots responded and pulled away to win the set by seven points to take a 2-0 lead.
Facing defeat, the Red-and-Black respond in the third set. Big Red raced out to a 5-1 advantage resulting in Gentile calling another timeout. This timeout did not work as well as her previous one as the home team kept the momentum on their side. Big Red built a 9-2 advantage to take control. Wheeling Park ended up battling back a bit in the set, however, Big Red went on to win the set by seven points to pull within 2-1 in the match.
“The girls wanted to win, and they showed that,” Colabella said. “They want to win, and they don’t give up. They got down 2-0, but they didn’t stop trying.”
The fourth set was close for a bit, however, the Patriots went on a run to take control. Big Red attempted to battle back, but Wheeling Park rose to the occasion and pulled away to win the set by double digits to win the match, 3-1.
“We made too many mistakes,” Colabella said about her team’s play in the fourth set. “We did not capitalize when we needed to.”
Wheeling Park is slated to play University tonight on the road.
Big Red is scheduled to play city-rival Catholic Central Thursday night on the road inside the Mickey Barber Gymnasium.
