WEIRTON -- The Weir High football team got off to a good start on Friday night, but it was visiting Moorefield that finished strong.
After Red Riders led in the second quarter, the visiting Yellow Jackets scored the final 30-unanswered points to defeat Weir High 37-14 Friday night at Jimmy Carey Stadium.
After falling behind 7-0 late in the first quarter on a long Moorefield TD run, the Red Riders answered back with a 51-yard Nick DiMatteis to Landon Haught pass, catch and run. A bad snap on the extra point left the visitors on top, 7-6.
After the defense got a fourth-down stop, the Red Riders took the lead, this time Tyrek Petteway breaking a 38-yard TD run to put Weir High in the lead, then Haught hauling in a two-point pass from DiMatteis to make it 14-7 Red Riders.
It was all Yellow Jackets from there, however, as the visitors answered on the next drive, marching down the field, scoring on a short run then converting a two-point run to re-take the lead, 15-14, at halftime.
After the break, Moorefield out-scored the Red Riders 22-0 in the second half to pull away for the victory.
Moorefield, now 5-4, entered the week just inside the Class AA playoff race and will look to clinch a playoff berth next week against Berkeley Springs.
The Red Riders (0-9) close the season with a trip down Route 2 to take on Brooke in the annual county line rivalry clash.
