WEIRTON – Associates of the Madonna football program are in need of hole sponsors for the organization’s annual golf outing, which will be held on June 6 at Woodview Golf Course with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.

There are three levels of sponsorship: Platinum at $500, gold at $250 and silver at $125 for various sizes of signage. Donations of $500 or more entitle the donor to a foursome in the outing.

Checks should be made payable to: Madonna Football, 150 Michael Way Weirton, WV 26062. Cost of the outing, itself, is $70 per person.

CCHS to compete in finals

NAVARRE – Eight members of the Steubenville Catholic Central track and field team will participate in the Ohio Division III regional championships Friday at Fairless High School.

Freshman Allie Zapolnik qualified in the 400 (1:03.43) and then teamed with Kara Kakascik, Lauren Hunt and Jordan Wood to qualify in the 4×400 relay (4:18.29).

Also looking to qualify for the state meet June 5-6 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium at Ohio State University are Kakascik (800), Katie Engle (discus), John Bolster (800), Brody Mihalyo (1600) and Joey Schlich (3200).

UNIONPORT – Bob Woodward recorded a hole-in-one at Red Oaks Golf Course. He used an 8-iron on the par 4 fourth hole. Jack Byers witnessed the shot.

Youth hit by baseball dies

BEMIDJI, Minn. – Police say a 15-year-old baseball player has died after being struck by a ball in the northern Minnesota city of Bemidji.

The president of the Bemidji Youth Baseball League, Bruce Dahlin, tells KSTP-TV that Zacharie Schaubhut lived in Des Moines, Iowa, but was living with his grandparents for the summer so he could play baseball in Bemidji.

Police say the incident happened just before 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the Bemidji High School baseball field. Police say Zacharie was pitching and was struck by a ball that a batter hit. He died later at a hospital.

Murder Suspect Busted

CADIZ – A man authorities believed murdered another man in Harrison County this week was captured Friday.

Authorities arrested Wesley “Buster” Clark, 52, in Carroll County, Ohio just after noon Friday after the murder suspect managed to elude investigators over the last few days.

According to information from the Tuscarwaras County Sheriff’s Department, deputies from Harrison and Carroll counties joined Highway Patrol troopers to track down Clark, who apparently spent much of the last week running through the three-county area.

Clark is suspected of murdering 26-year-old Dustin Moreland, of Dennison, whose family reported him missing last week. According to published reports, officials found Moreland fatally shot along Lone Pine Road in Harrison County late Tuesday. Authorities believe Clark is the killer.

Deputies reportedly searched for Clark behind a Carroll County house Friday. After a police dog caught the scent of Clark’s jacket, authorities found him hunkering down in the grass. He surrendered without resistance.

Moreland reportedly made plans to travel to Texas with Clark to work in the oil and natural gas fields, but his family became suspicious when they could not get in touch with him.

Chamber holding mayor’s debate

WEIRTON – The Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce would like to remind residents there will be a debate between the top two candidates for mayor in the city’s election.

The debate, organized by the chamber’s Government Affairs Committee, will take place at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the Weirton Room of the Millsop Community Center.

It will feature the top two finishers of the city’s primary election, incumbent Mayor George Kondik and challenger Harold “Bubba” Miller. The debate will be open to the public.

The format for the event will include a short, opening statement from each candidate, followed by questions submitted by chamber members and the Government Affairs Committee.

It is scheduled for 60 minutes.

WEIRTON – The Weirton Sanitary Board will meet at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Sanitary Plant conference room located at 5000 Freedom Way.

Literacy council to honor volunteers

WEIRTON – The Weirton Area Literacy Council will hold its annual Volunteer Celebration honoring those involved with the council and the Mary H. Weir Public Library’s Literacy and Lifelong Learning Program at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the library.

Those earning high school diploma equivalency also will be honored at the program, which is open to the public.

FOLLANSBEE – The Follansbee Chamber of Commerce will resume its monthly meetings beginning Tuesday at noon at Vito’s 2.

The chamber meets on the third Tuesday of each month and welcomes new members and community input.

Health board to meet Monday

WELLSBURG – The Brooke County Board of Health will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Brooke County Public Library.

The board will discuss the 2016 fiscal budget, a statewide food handler’s card and other issues.

FBA sets annual event

FOLLANSBEE – The Follansbee Baseball Association will hold its fourth-annual Mid Season Classic from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Follansbee Baseball Fields.

This year’s event will feature the MLB Pitch, Hit and Run competition, open to boys and girls age 7 to 14, as well as bounce houses from Bounce Boyz, music, a dunk tank and more. An appearance by the Pittsburgh Pirate Parrot is scheduled from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Never Alone requests prayer

WEIRTON – Never Alone WV is requesting local churches to take time Sunday to offer prayer for those affected by addiction.

The project is part of the Ohio Valley Heroin/Opiate Community Action Plan, which Never Alone is working with U.S. Attorney William Ihlenfeld to develop.

Churches are being asked to pray for those addicted, their families and the community.

Mohigans beat Brooke

WELLSBURG -The Brooke baseball team concluded its regular season with a 5-2 loss against Morgantown on Monday.

The Bruins finish at 13-14 before starting sectional play Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Wheeling Park. Brooke will host Game 2 on Thursday.

Against Morgantown, Hunter Grishkevich took the loss on the mound. Zac Sacripanti relieved him in the sixth inning, then Fargo Camerlengo came on in the seventh.

Grishkevich had an RBI single at the plate.

Locals win a match

DOVER – Steubenville’s Jorge Dominguez and Brandon Delaratta and Indian Creek’s Justin Caniff and Paul Voltz each won a match at the Division II sectional tennis tournament Monday at Dover City Park, but their respective seasons came to an end one match later.

Dominguez beat Nick Marino (Dover) 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 before losing to St. Clairsville’s Austin Douglass 6-2, 6-3.

Delaratta topped Skyler Smolak (Claymont) 7-5, 6-0 before losing to St. Clairsville’s Brendan Ryan 6-3, 6-2.

Caniff defeated Joe Goggin (Cambridge) 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 before losing to No. 1 seeded Cameron Wiandt (Coshocton) 6-0, 6-0.

Voltz downed Jason Abrahan 6-1, 6-2 before losing to No. 2 seeded Brent Keating (Dover) 6-1, 6-0.

Steubenville’s Fegerico Torres lost to C.J. Jenkins (Claymont) 7-6, 6-2.

In doubles, Indian Creek’s Cole Recinella and Michael Vella won its first match 6-2, 6-3, before losing to Hiland’s top team 6-1, 6-1.

Steubenville’s Annie Nehrbas and DeShaun Smith dropped its opener 6-0, 6-1, while Tyler Clevenger and Phil Stoutz lost a tough one 6-0, 2-6, 7-6.

Smoking workshops planned

NEW CUMBERLAND – The Hancock County Health Department will host three informational workshops on the Clean Air Regulation that takes effect July 1.

The two-hour workshops will be held at 11 a.m. May 15 at the Chester Municipal Building and at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. May 20 at the Mary H. Weir Library.

Boil order lifted

WEIRTON – The boil order put into effect for the County Road area of Weirton was lifted at 7 a.m. Sunday, according to the Weirton Area Water Board.

The order affected the area north of City Street, along County Road, Weircrest and Kings Creek Bowl.

Edison shuts out Cambridge

CAMBRIDGE?-?The Edison softball team concluded its regular season with a 7-0 win over Cambridge.

Lucia Eroshevich earned the win on the mound, allowing just two hits and striking out four. Ashlee Miller had a two-run triple at the plate and Cassady Jarvis collected two hits.

The Wildcats (15-10) will play Indian Creek Monday in the sectional at Jefferson Lake State Park.

Quarter auction set for Saturday

FOLLANSBEE – A quarter auction to benefit the Follansbee Volunteer Fire Department will be held Saturday at the Follansbee Community House.

Doors will open at 1 p.m., with the auction held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The cost is $5 for the first paddle and $2 for each additional paddle.

More than 20 vendors have contributed items for the auction.

There also will be a Chinese auction, 50-50 drawing and food for sale.

Fourth Ward Park cleanup set

WELLSBURG -Citizens of the 4th Ward will again hold a cleanup at the ward’s park at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring shovels, rakes, gloves and wheelbarrows.
