Junior golf tourney to be held

ST. CLAIRSVILLE – Belmont Hills Country Club will host a junior golf tournament July 25 in a 10 a.m. shotgun start.

Road Runner Elite goes 5-2

COLUMBUS – The Road Runner Elite 18U travel softball team went 5-2 to finish in eighth place at the AWA 18U State Tournament.

Indian Creek graduate Paige Geanangel picked three wins inside the circle. She also added three doubles and three RBIs. Steubenville Catholic Central senior Shayna Mirabella had a double.

On the season, Crusaders graduate Alex McComb is 3-0-1 as a pitcher. Geanangel is 5-1-1 and is slugging .758.

The Elite head to Massillon looking to defend its title in the Best of the Best Tournament.

Weir golf to hold meeting

WEIRTON – A player informational meeting for the Weir High golf team will be held at 10 a.m. July 21 at the high school gymnasium with head coach Dave Hinerman. Required WVSSAC physical forms are available at the school office and must be filled out completely before practice begins on Aug. 1.

Basketball camp to be held

WEIRTON – Steel City Warriors Basketball will hold a Tri-State Drills Clinic and 3-on-3 contest from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. July 12 at the Millsop Community Center. Cost is $55 per person.

Instructional camp to be held

WEIRTON – The Ohio Valley Viper Team Basketball Fundamental Camp, run by Viper Coach A.J. Forte, will be held in Weirton on July 5-7 for boys and girls ages 7-12. Ages 10-12 will go from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and ages 7-9 will go from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The $30 fee includes T-shirt, water and pizza lunch on final day of camp.

Participants will work on offensive drills, defensive drills, foul shooting, dribbling, defensive shuffling and other basic skills. Several high school coaches from the area will be on hand for special instruction.

Avella site of history fair, car cruise

AVELLA – The second-annual A.D. White Research Society history fair and car cruise willl be held Sept. 25 at the Avella Volunteer Fire Department located on state Route 50.

Those interested are invited to display items of historical and cultural interest from Washington Count, western Allegheny County and southern Beaver County and West Virginia’s Northern Panhandle at no charge. Local historical societies and other organizations are invited to participate. There will be a limited number of tables available to crafters and artisans.

This event is a continuation of the Avella History Fair organized by Kathryn Slasor for many years at the former Avella High School building.

The car cruise will include dash plaques for the first 50 cars to register. The St. Michael’s Catholic Church parishoners will provide concessions.

Steak fry planned at Avella ballfield

AVELLA – Avella Athletics will hold a steak fry July 9-10 at the Polarstar ballfield.

The event will include a corn hole tournament, and 30 teams of two players each will be accepted. It is $10 per person or $20 per team.

National Night Out event set

MCDONALD – The McDonald Police Department will host an National Night Out event from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 2 at Heritage Park.

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign building partnerships between local law enforcement and the communities they police. The goal of the event is to allow police and the community to interact in a positive way while bringing back a sense of community. It is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and is celebrated in communities across the country.

It is an opportunity for the community to meet the first responders who serve their community every day.

Gallagher apologizes for fight

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Spencer Gallagher apologized Monday for his role in a fight with John Wes Townley during NASCAR’s Truck Series race at Gateway Motorsports Park.

The two were involved in a pair of on-track incidents that culminated in a scuffle during Saturday night’s race. After both drivers climbed from their damaged trucks, Townley charged at Gallagher and knocked him to the ground.

“The incident earlier in the race was not intentional and certainly was not meant to cause bigger problems later in the event,” Gallagher said. “My crew, who have worked so hard to get me to where I am this season, did not deserve to have their night ended in that way.

The fight has received widespread attention on various media platforms, and NASCAR chairman Brian France said jokingly Monday on Sirius NASCAR Radio that neither driver has a future as a UFC champion.

WVU tickets to go on sale

MORGANTOWN – West Virginia University says new season tickets for the upcoming basketball season go on sale Tuesday at the Mountaineer Ticket Office.

New men’s basketball season ticket holders who purchase by July 29 will be able to select their seat locations during online seat selection in September. Mountaineer Athletic Club members at the gold annual giving level and above will be able to self-select lower-level seats, if available.

Upper-level season tickets are available for $340 each in the upper sideline sections and $275 in the upper baseline sections.

Manziel attorney resigns

DALLAS – Johnny Manziel’s spokeswoman says an attorney who accidently sent The Associated Press a text message with details related to the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback’s domestic violence case has resigned from the defense team.

Denise Michaels on Monday confirmed her earlier tweet that Bob Hinton had withdrawn from the case, which is being led by El Paso attorney Jim Darnell.

The AP reported last week that Hinton’s inadvertent text indicated he had doubts about Manziel’s ability to stay clean and that he was given a receipt that allegedly shows Manziel may have spent more than $1,000 at a drug paraphernalia store the day following a hit-and-run crash. The text was sent Wednesday after the AP sought comment via text about the crash.

The 23-year-old Manziel faces a misdemeanor assault chart on allegations of hitting and threatening former girlfriend Colleen Crowley in January.

Saints to keep training camp in W.Va.

METAIRIE, La. – The New Orleans Saints are planning to keep their training camp in West Virginia after recent flooding in the state killed at least 23 people.

The team says in a statement it has been in contact with officials at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs and it still plans to hold training camp at the facility beginning on July 27.

In Monday night’s statement attributed to team executives Dennis Lauscha and Mickey Loomis, the Saints say they “will continue to monitor the situation and look for ways that our team/organization can contribute in a positive way while we are there this summer.”

The team also says it is working with United Way to provide assistance for victims of the flooding.

Bethany’s Gibson to play at World Championship

BETHANY – Bethany College sophomore defensive tackle Daniel Gibson has been selected to take part in the 2016 International Federation of American Football Under-19 World Championships.

USA Football, a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee, manages U.S. national teams for international competitions. Approximately 70 countries across five continental federations possess a national federation dedicated to the sport.

“Being chosen to compete for your country is the greatest honor that an athlete can receive, and I know that Daniel is really humbled by the opportunity,” said Bison defensive coordinator Joe Battaglia.

Gibson is one of 44 players, age 19 or under, representing 20 states, that will compete in the seven-nation tournament.

The tournament is being held Thursday through July 11 in Harbin, China. Gibson, a defensive tackle for the Bison football program, is the only NCAA Division III athlete on the roster.

CHESTER – The third annual Fred Bell Memorial Golf Tournament will be held June 25 at Mountaineer’s Woodview Golf Course.

The four-man scramble with shotgun start begins at 8 a.m.

MCDONALD – The McDonald Police Department will host an National Night Out event from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 2 at Heritage Park.

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign building partnerships between local law enforcement and the communities they police. The goal of the event is to allow police and the community to interact in a positive way while bringing back a sense of community. It is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watchers and is celebrated in communities across the country.

Cadiz outlasts Richmond

CADIZ – Cadiz Post 34 took an 8-3 lead after seven innings and held on for an 11-10 win over visiting Richmond Post 740 Saturday afternoon at Sally Buffalo Park.

SJC basketball camp is set

BELLAIRE – The 28th-annual St. John Central basketball camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 25-29. Campers are urged to bring a bagged lunch as refrigeration is available. Allen wins Kelly Cup

ALLEN – The Allen Americans claimed their second straight Kelly Cup title on Thursday with a 4-2 win over the Wheeling Nailers in Game 6 of the 2016 Kelly Cup Finals at the Allen Event Center.

Allen is the first team to win back-to-back ECHL titles since the Toledo Storm claimed Riley Cup championships in 1993 and 1994.

The Americans are the third team in League history to win consecutive championships, joining Toledo and the 1991 and 1992 Hampton Roads Admirals.

LANCASTER – Steubenville Post 33 won a pair of high-scoring games Sunday against host Lancaster, 15-8 and 18-16. Post 33 came from behind in both games.

Lancaster scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for an 8-7 lead, but Steubenville scored eight in the top of the seventh.

Lancaster held a 12-1 lead through two innings of Game 2 (scoring eight runs in the bottom of the first), but Post 33 scored in every inning, including six in the sixth and three in the seventh, for the sweep.

McGirt wins Memorial in a playoff

DUBLIN, Ohio – William McGirt won for the first time on the PGA Tour with a playoff victory in the Memorial that earned him an audience with Jack Nicklaus and a spot in the U.S. Open.

McGirt won in his 165th start on the tour. He played bogey-free the final round for a 1-under 71, two-putting from 65 feet to get into a playoff with Jon Curran, who closed with a 70.

They finished at 15-under 273.

McGirt won with a par on the second extra hole at No. 18, getting up-and-down from the rough behind the green by holing a putt just outside 6 feet. He will move into the top 50 in the world.

WASHINGTON – Burgettstown Day will be held at 7:05 p.m. Friday at Washington Wild Things game versus the Evansville Otters at CONSOL Energy Park located at 1 Washington Federal Way.

The gates open at 6 p.m., and a fireworks show will immediately follow the game.

Burgettstown residents will participate in a variety of activities, from the national anthem and ceremonial first pitch to the “Field of Dreams,” during which children may run out onto the field with the Wild Things players.

Tickets are $10 per person, and $5 from each ticket sale will be donated to the Burgettstown Area Youth Soccer Association. Tickets forms can be obtained from Mayor Anna Marie Quader or tickets may be purchased with a credit card by phone by calling (724) 250-9555 or at the ticket window the day of the game. Those wanting to take advantage of the discounted price and have a portion of their ticket sale be donated to BAYSA must identify themselves as part of the Burgettstown community.

Farm hosts dinner, music jam

AVELLA – Weatherbury Farm will host a potluck dinner and folk music jam Friday at the farm’s Livery Hall, behind the farmhouse located at 1061 Sugar Run Road.

The potluck dinner begins at 6:15 p.m., and those attending are asked to bring a dish to share. The folk music jam begins immediately after the dinner, and those attending are welcome to bring an instrument.

Pancake breakfast planned

MCDONALD – National Trail Day will be observed with an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the McDonald Trail Station on South McDonald Street.

The meal includes pancakes, sausage, juice, coffee, milk and tea. The cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children and free for children 2 and under.

McDonald hosts yard sale

MCDONALD – A community-wide garage and yard sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Those living in the borough are encouraged to hold a garage or yard sale that day and to call (724) 926-2631 to have their sale place on a map of yard sales that will be available at the McDonald Presbyterian Church located at 119 Station St.

Sportsmen’s Club plans events

PARIS – The Paris Sportsmen’s Club has announced several upcoming outreach events open to the public. They include:

1 p.m. Saturday, .22-caliber rifle shoot. The cost is $10 per person.
