Indian Creek rallies to top Steubenville in four sets

STEUBENVILLE — Indian Creek’s volleyball team entered the Crimson Center Tuesday and staged a hitting clinic.

Backed by the powerful arms of Renee Antonelli, Sydney Karas, Taylor Mazzaferro and Chelsea Connor, who combined for 46 kills, the Redskins climbed back after a Game 1 loss and prevailed over Steubenville Big Red 18-25, 25-19, 25-11, and 25-14.

“I have to give credit to my front row hitters tonight, especially junior Renee Antonelli,” second-year head coach Molly Edgerly said. “They were killing the ball and got the rest of the team together. Tonight is the first time we pulled together as a team and played for each other.”

Big Red came on strong in Game 1, with its hitters tallying 11 kills. A Jaliyah Hubbard slam put the hosts up 25-18 to close out the match.

“Game 1 was the best match we have played all season, we looked awesome,” Big Red coach Lynn Meyer said. “After that we got too cautious. Our hitters placed a couple of balls out of bounds and got too nervous and started hitting soft shots. We played with a ‘not-to- lose’ attitude instead of playing to win.”

Edgerly’s crew then bounced back and rolled to three straight victories. Game 2 featured a number of knotted scores and gritty defensive play, before the visitors pulled out a 25-19 win. Creek then took advantage of Big Red’s errors in Game 3, cruising to a 25-11 victory.

Although Big Red came within one point, on a Sidney Snider tip, in Game 4, the Redskins dug deep and went on to win the match 25-14 win.

“The girls played a smart back row, which allowed us to dominate at the net,” Edgerly noted. “We didn’t let our mistakes get to us and we played smart volleyball. Coach Meyer always does an amazing job with her team and we knew coming in that it was going to be a close game.”

Meyer believes if her team gains confidence and learns how to win, they can be successful.

“I told the girls that they need to start believing in themselves and have some confidence in themselves and in each other,” Meyer added. “After game 2, they got in their own heads and didn’t play the game they are capable of playing. We had too many unforced errors and didn’t play good volleyball in the third and fourth games.”

Big Red, now 1-3, was led by Jaliyah Hubbard with 12 kills and four digs; Lexi Biasi with nine points and 21 assists; Courtney Martin with three points and 11 digs; and Sidney Snider with four points, 10 kills and five blocks. Diamond Thompson added five points and three kills; Rhiannon Petrisko tallied two kills and three blocks, and Leah Ferguson posted seven digs.

Big Red will go head-to-head with city rival Steubenville Catholic Central today.

“Central is our city rival and we know they are going to come in ready to play,” Meyer noted. “I told the girls to come in with a clean slate. They now need to get ready and focus on Central.”

The Redskins, 2-2, were led by Antonelli with 19 kills, seven digs, one block and one ace. Senior Karas added 14 kills, eight digs, and two aces; Mazzaferro had seven kills, one dig and two aces; while Connor had six kills and five blocks. Savannah Shanley added 47 assists and two aces; Caitlin Shannon posted one kill, 11 digs, six aces and one assist; and Autumn Miller tallied two kills, three digs and one ace.

“This is a huge momentum builder for us and I’m excited to celebrate this win with the girls,” Edgerly added.

Indian Creek is off until Saturday when it hosts Harrison Central.
