Oak Glen bests Brooke for first time in 50 years

NEW MANCHESTER - Ted Arneault wanted his Golden Bears to get back on track and make improvements Friday night.
They did just that, scoring early and often, en route to a 61-21 defeat of Brooke. The win is the first for Oak Glen against the Bruins since 1970 and was the first meeting between the rivals in 30 years.
"We wanted to make sure we were getting better on some of the things we needed to work on, and we did," Oak Glen head coach Ted Arneault said. "We got off to a good start. It's a great tradition (to play Brooke), I hope it'll go on in the future. We're two schools right next to each other. I'm hoping the series continues with them and we make something of it for a long time to come."
Oak Glen (4-1) scored three times before the first quarter was halfway over and held a 28-7 lead after the opening 12 minutes.
Brooke (1-5), who continued to be bit by costly turnovers, fumbling the ball four times in the first half, got back within two scores at 28-14, but the Golden Bears pounced again and made it 42-14 at the break.
"You have to play a perfect game against a team like that, and we obviously didn't," Brooke head coach Mac McLean said. "They have some special talent. You blink, and they put three touchdowns on you, and they've been doing that to a lot of teams. I'll be very surprised if Oak Glen doesn't put a state championship on the board this year."
Hunter Patterson had a big night in the receiving game, hauling in five passes for 140 yards and a pair of touchdowns, adding a 24-yard scoring run. His first touchdown, a 17-yard strike from Nick Chaney (216 yards, three touchdowns) opened the scoring.
After a bad snap on a punt put Oak Glen back in business, Chaney hit Brayden Mineard for a 41-yard score. The Bruins fumbled on the next possession, and Dylan Conley made it 20-0 on a 21-yard scoring run.
"We got off a good start to the game," Arneault said.
"We used some different tempos throughout the first half to work on things we need to work on going forward. The theme of what we're trying to do is working to get better. We want to play good teams and get better. We added these AAA teams to challenge us."
Josh Shorts put Brooke on the board with a 29-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Scipio, then the Bruins recovered an onside kick but fumbled on the ensuing possession, setting up the 24-yard Patterson scoring run to make it 28-7.
After a Shorts touchdown made it a 14-point game, Patterson took a short pass 59 yards through the Bruins defense to score. Then, Paxton Shuman powered in for a 13-yard score to open up the big lead at the break.
"We got back to within two scores, then it was four scores in a matter of four plays," McLean said. "When they've got the Pattersons and (Chaney) and that set of receivers, they're going to do that to teams. It's not just the Brooke Bruins, every team they play is going to have to deal with that. That's a credit to coach Arneault. They're a really good football team."
Brooke fumbled on the first possession of the second half, leading to a Kaden Lundy score, then an interception set up an Anthony Burt score. The Bruins finished with six turnovers overall.
"It's a tough situation right now, and I'm the one that's got to get us out of it," McLean said.
The Golden Bears used 13 different ball carriers, totaling 305 yards and six scores on the ground. Burt, a sophomore, led that attack with 68 yards and a score on 13 carries, all in the second half.
"I was impressed with some of our kids that stepped up and made plays for us," Arneault said. "I'm happy with the distribution of the ball. To get more depth into the game is great for us, it's great experience for them."
The Bruins got a late 55-yard touchdown from Braelyn Sperringer, who had 66 yards on the ground and another 39 receiving.
