Crusaders advance to sectional final behind Miller’s 22

Charles Miller

CALDWELL — On the strength of Charles Miller’s game-high 22 points and solid defense, Catholic Central advanced to the Division IV East sectional finals following a 36-35 victory over Caldwell on Tuesday.

The Crusaders, the 12th seed, tentatively face third-seed Hiland (52-36 winners over Tusky CC) at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Caldwell, the No. 6 seed, had a chance to win it with .9 seconds remaining but missed.

Central trailed No. 6 Caldwell, 8-3, following one quarter, then 10-9 at halftime. Miller scored 18 points — including five 3-pointers — in the second half where the Crusaders outscored their opponents, 27-25.

“Both teams set basketball back about 40 years in the first half,” Central head coach Don Ogden said. “We had good looks, but the shots weren’t falling. We told them at half to keep their confidence, shoot with confidence and don’t get down. I think Charles then came out and hit five straight 3-pointers. That, obviously, was huge.

“We did change some things up defensively. In my mind, it was a game of defensive adjustments for both teams.”

Also for Central, Vince Carapellotti scored seven points. Ryan Gorman added three.

“We’re happy to be playing Friday instead of turning in our jerseys (Wednesday),” Ogden said.
