Oak Glen utilizes fast start to victory over Cameron

NEW CUMBERLAND -- Oak Glen's girls basketball team broke through into the win column with a 65-45 win over Cameron on Monday.
Oak Glen jumped out to a 29-11 lead in the first half and held off a Cameron run in the third quarter to secure the win. Cameron falls to 1-1 on the season, while Oak Glen improves to 1-2.
"We were playing better defense than we have been playing," Oak Glen coach Scott Wiley said. "They were moving their feet well, and they were helping. We were doing things that we should have been doing and it takes a while. We have some different girls playing this year and girls in different positions. We are trying to spread the wealth around, and it takes time to get used to playing with each other."
The Bears used ball movement and solid defense to pull away from the Dragons early in the contest.
"It's just normal basketball," Wiley said. "When they are pressuring you, you should backdoor. After three years, we are starting to learn how to do those things. Sometimes it takes a while for them to do those things. I just think these girls playing together for the last couple of years is helping out."
Reece Enochs led the Bears with 20 points, 18 coming in the second half. Alexus Greenlief added 11 points. For Cameron, Lili Neely had 14 points and Ashlynn Van Tassell added 12 points.
"We were ready to full court press and we wanted to pressure them," Enochs said. "I knew that if I denied the ball I could get a few steals.
"We started off rough in the beginning, but when we went in the locker room, we knew we had to step it up to get the win. This is our first win, so now that we have that under our belt, we are ready to keep going."
For Cameron, a slow start proved to be the deciding factor in this one.
"I think defensively we struggled in the beginning," Cameron coach Holly Pettit said. "My girls just weren't on their game. You have good days, and you have bad days, and it was definitely a bad day. Just by watching them we knew what they were going to do offensively, and the girls just struggled with it."
Cameron did pull within five in the third quarter to make the score 35-30. From there, Oak Glen outscored the Dragons 30-15 to pull away for the win.
"We all just wanted to win," Enochs said. "We saw that we were getting close, and we weren't going to let them take it from us."
"You are scared as a coach how your team is going to react," Wiley said about the Cameron run. "I had to pull everyone in the third quarter because we couldn't rebound.
"I have confidence in all of our girls. I don't know that we have one or two certain people, it is going to take everybody. I just had confidence in whatever five that were in there that they can get the job done."
JV ACTION
Cameron won the two-quarter jayvee contest, 25-17. It started roughly 30 minutes late due to a Cameron bussing issue.
