Big Red’s Gresko, Rubish receive Basil’s scholarships

Andrew Grimm

For the third consecutive year, Basil’s Sports Bar and Grill in Weirton presented two area senior student-athletes with $1,000 scholarships Tuesday. This year’s recipients are Andrew Gresko and Tia Rubish, both seniors at Steubenville High School. Gresko competed for Big Red’s football, basketball and baseball teams and will be attending West Virginia University. Rubish was a member of the varsity and competitive cheer squads for Big Red and will be attending the University of Pittsburgh. Gresko, Rubish and their families were welcomed to “The Dugout” at Basil’s for a meal and presented with the scholarships. Owner Pete Basil, a retired educator himself, noted there were 60 applicants for this year’s scholarships. Applicants submitted a written essay describing how playing sports shaped who they are and what it has taught them, which were read and scored by seven different people, with Gresko and Rubish selected as this year’s winners. The annual scholarship is open to senior student-athletes from Steubenville, Catholic Central, Indian Creek, Edison, Buckeye Local, Brooke, Weir High, Madonna, Oak Glen and Toronto high schools.
