CADIZ -- Ohio State head wrestling coach Tom Ryan and members of his talented squad will be at Harrison Central for three days next month.
Ryan will be the featured clinician, and at least five -- maybe six -- Buckeyes will serve as additional clinicians at the Harrison Central Wrestling Camp.
"We're very excited to have him coming to our camp," Harrison Central head wrestling coach Bill Bryant said. "It's huge for our program. The kids will get to meet coach Ryan and some of his wrestlers."
The camp is broken down into two divisions. The first division is for individuals in grades 7-12 and will be held June 2nd through the 4th from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. There will be a lunch break from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., with food being provided. The cost is $150 per camper, and campers will not be permitted to leave between sessions.
The second division is for kids in grades 2-6 and it will be held on June 2 and 3 from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. The cost there is $50 per camper, and a snack will be provided. This division is only for serious wrestlers looking to improve their skills.
There is a 75-wrestler limit for each division, and there will be a $25 discount on a second camper from the same family.
"I've got some flyers out to several people who have reached out to me, and I've also reached out to area coaches," Bryant said. "I think I've probably got between 12-15 back so far in the mail."
The additional clinicians who have been announced are Malik Heinselman, Anthony Echemendia, Ethan Smith, Dylan D'Emilio and Tate Orndorff. Heinselman, a three-time NCAA qualifier, and Echemendia, a six-time Cuban national champ, will appear on June 2. Smith, a three-time NCAA qualifier and one-time All-American, and D'Emilio, a four-time OHSAA champion and NCAA qualifier, will appear on June 3, with Orndorff, a three-time NCAA qualifier and one-time All-American, appearing on June 4. Another clinician or one of the aforementioned will also appear on June 4.
Bryant said he emailed Ryan back in late February, and two weeks later the pair were talking via zoom.
"We talked about what I specifically wanted to accomplish at the camp. There are certain aspects that I want our kids to learn, such as core values from a family standpoint," Bryant said. "Kids tend to listen more when they are hearing stuff from someone other than their own coaches."
Bryant thinks the youth camp will be a big draw.
"It's very important, I think, that the kids get involved at the youth level. There is so much that can be taught through wrestling," he said.
Bryant also is especially thankful for his boosters organization.
"We put on one big fundraiser for the season and most of the money we made from it this year is going into this camp. I can't express my appreciation for the boosters," he said.
Pre-registration is due by Friday. Free camp T-shirts will be pre-ordered, so not all sizes may match.
Parents will not be permitted in the gymnasium during instruction time.
